There were several "Wake Up and Draw" eventsw going on at comics shops around the country (and even some in Canada) to commemorate Kirby's 99th today....

On August 28th marks what would be Jack Kirby’s 99th birthday. To celebrate the comic legend The Hero Initiative and Jillian Kirby, founder of Kirby4Heroes campaign have put together a “Wake Up and Draw” that will feature more than 50 artists doing just that… waking up and drawing. All the drawings will be featured in a gallery on ComicArtFans.com and will be auctioned to benefit the Hero Initiative starting August 30th.

And as a special bonus, artist Phil Hester will be drawing all day to create 99 Kirby-inspired pieces. You’ll be able to follow him on twitter or any of the artist using the hashtag #WakeUpAndDraw.

Jillian Kirby, Jack’s youngest granddaughter, has spearheaded the “Kirby4Heroes” campaign since 2012. Jillian has recruited a number of comic stores to donate a percentage of their sales to Hero on this special day. Individual fans can visit the official Kirby4Heroes campaign Facebook page at www.facebook.com/kirby4heroes and donate via the PayPal link at www.HeroInitiative.org. Please type in “Kirby4Heroes” in the special instructions box.

MY wife showed me this Kirby piece the other day that appeared in her facebook feed from the 70s Sci Fi art page, it's a preliminary drawinghe did of Metron circa 1967-1969, while still working for Marvel before the Fourth World books were even in the works at DC...

I didn't know his birthday was yesterday, yet Cindy and I celebrated it by recording our thoughts on two of his Jimmy Olsen episodes on an upcoming Super Mates.

Back in my college days, I pushed one of my teacher's to use this Kirby design for an assignment. We all got to reinterpret Kirby's "Galactic Head". That was a blast!

Happy Belated Birthday to The King. He is a man whom forever changed the face of comics/graphic storytelling. That's a damn great legacy to leave behind.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
