I also liked these books (I think the first couple of figures I got had this sort of illustrated storybook) and the continuity it offered.

Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

He-Man was a caveman? That makes him cooler right there.

Those mini books that came with the figures were awesome. Always liked this original incarnation of He-Man best.

Now He-man looks like a Ka-zar rip-off. Even the number of letters and hyphen are the same. He looks like Ka-zar, and has a giant cat. Hmmmmmm.....

I loved this version of He-Man, and this is the way I played with my figures at first. Then the DC Preview for the MOTU mini introduced me to the Prince Adam concept. I have to say, as a kid, I preferred that version. But nowadays...

              Love the Alfredo Acala artwork!

I had the Canadian bilingual versions of some of those early mini books.

This book is awesome, by the way:

This post just summed up everything I was thinking, Chris! I was checking out different design pics because Super 7 has the Mark Taylor MOTU art portfolio for San Diego 2016.
Available only at the Skeletor’s Lair pop-up shop during SDCC while supplies last. Available for the first time, original Masters of the Universe concept art for the original MOTU figures from 1981! Mark Taylor will [...]

Which led me to the amazing Alfredo Acala pages. I really prefer the original concept compared to the more child friendly direction they went as time went on. But maybe the property wouldnt be with us to this day if they hadnt changed direction?

that idea didn't make it into the animated series right? Although didn't She-Ra have some kind of twin sword or a magic sword split from his power sword or something like that?

You can really see the Conan roots of the line in that first story.
