    Independence Day: Resurgence

    It's getting horrible reviews...

As the Fourth of July nears, satellite engineer David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) investigates a 3,000-mile-wide mother ship that's approaching Earth. Fortunately, 20 years earlier, nations across the world started to use recovered extraterrestrial technology to develop an immense defense program. When the alien invaders attack with unprecedented force, the U.S. president, teams of scientists and brave fighter pilots spring into action to save the planet from a seemingly invincible enemy.

For the most part, the sequel to the 1996 smash isn't good-bad, or dumb-fun-bad, or I-just-need-to-kill-two-hours bad. It's like a whole new species of crappiness.

Independence Day is big, dumb, and full of heart. The special effects may look a little hokey in 2016, but that’s to be expected. It’s disaster porn, but hey, it’s damn good disaster porn. The sequel, unfortunately, is a turd.

    You can google many more...

Many say that while the original was not exactly high brow sci-fi storytelling...it was at least fun (agreed).

The new one seems to both stupid and boring...not a good sign...

Richard Roeper gave the film one and a half out of four stars, writing, "The Resurgence blueprint calls for a scene in which characters have human, allegedly humorous and/or touching moments; a scene in which characters plot strategy against the aliens; and a big action sequence in which it’s often difficult to tell the difference between the good-guy spaceships and the bad-guy spaceships. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat."Mike Ryan of Uproxx gave the film a negative review, saying, "This should be dumb fun. It's just dumb."Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film 1/5 stars, describing it as a "planet-smashingly boring sci-fi sequel."Dave Palmer of The Reel Deal gave the film 2/10, saying, "The final shot of the film is a set up for another sequel, and I just pray to God aliens come and wipe us out before that day comes." Robbie Collin of The Telegraph gave it 2/5 stars, saying it showing "no signs of intelligent life."

    The one that stuck out...

"Dave Palmer of The Reel Deal gave the film 2/10, saying, "The final shot of the film is a set up for another sequel, and I just pray to God aliens come and wipe us out before that day comes."

that's disappointing. the original was not big on plot but it is a lot of fun to watch. great popcorn movie. I still want to see the new one though. as I recall the critics were not too kind to the original either and it made boatloads of money

I love the original...seen it a boatload of times, as you said, it's really a fun movie, yes, not exactly high brow stuff...but it is fun.

As a fan of the old-school Irwin Allen disaster flicks, I gotta say I'm a sucker for watching aliens come down and kick humans' butts---at least until we find a way to defeat them with a simple binary code virus uploaded to their vastly superior technology by an Apple laptop. Heck, if Goldblum's character would've just taken a PC laptop with him and plugged it in, all the viruses and worms inherent to Windows' operating systems probably would've stopped the aliens a lot sooner! LOL! That being said, I'm sure I'll have my fanny in a matinee show to see ID:R only because watchin' stuff gettin' blowed up real good looks and sounds better on a really big screen....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

The original was more than enough for me and I have no interest in this film. I'm not surprised its getting bad reviews. The trailer drew almost no audience reaction the couple of times I saw it.

Making sequels so long after the original almost never works.

That and making a completely unneeded, unwanted and unnecessary sequel with a known crap film director and so so writer kind of put the nail in the coffin. This clearly screamed "we just really needed some money so we churned out more garbage hoping for the quick cash grab"
"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

Starroid Raiders Dagon wrote "No Dime Store Monster left behind"

I know was kind of alone but I never liked the original at all. I found it by the numers product.

^^^ I'm with Brian here. I never saw the fascination with the first one. I thought it benefited greatly as a front-loaded product that registered better in trailers than it ever played as a full length feature. The movie was so predictable in plot with such OTT characters, I never could buy into anything I was seeing. I only saw it in theaters once and never revisited the film again. Seeing the trailers for a sequel all these years later just reminded me of all the plot issues the first one had, so it didn't surprise me this would have anything to add to that. I'm sure it will have a descent opening weekend, then disappear.

I didn't like the original either. I thought it would be turn off your brain and have fun. Unfortunetly I thought it was just dumb and bad. To each their own.

Count me in on not getting the appeal of the original either. Stargate, Godzilla, Independence Day, etc. I just don't care for any of Emmerich's films. I don't find his films Plan 9 fun bad. They're just bad.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Honestly, my only fond memory of the first one was when Harvey Fierstein said something like "Oh my Gawd! I gotta cawl my motha".

I'll probably go see the sequel just to see lots of stuff get destroyed again.

It's true that Emmerich is one of the worst directors out there. I think the only movie of his I've actually liked to any degree was Stargate.

I hate to pile on but I'm no fan of the director either. I don't like anything he's ever made period.
