Kenner SSP Racers/Denys Fisher REVRODS (Any fans?)

These were some of my very favorite toys in the early to mid 70's.

One of my personal favorites, The green Laker Special.

I love the SSP Racers! I really like the smash up derby stuff. And the ones that make sparks.

As a kid, I had a Citgo (gas station) blue mini Laker special. When I took that thing to Kindergarten, all the annoying little boys wanted to be my friend. Now as an adult, I have 3 Citgo minis (2 Laker Specials and a Can Am), and a standard size Blue Monday and a Black Jack.

I really enjoyed my SSP when I was little. I still have one of them, as well as my Demolition Derby cars. They are hard to find in good shape, for obvious reasons.

I did an SSP shirt design recently as well, here it is.

Yeah, the SSP's were really cool. My best friend and I had a couple. I definitely remember the King Cobra. The demolition derby ones I loved. I played with those things quite a bit. What a great idea for a toy. Actually designed to be smashed, broke and no harm done. It's the toy you were meant to break. Just don't loose a wheel under the couch or in the heat vent. These are on my short list of toys I must reacquire from my childhood.

In Europe, Kenner SSP Racers were released by Denys Fisher as REVRODS.

The SSP Eliminator was released as the Blazer Special.

The SSP Sidewinder was released without a name change.

The SSP Laker Special was released as the Eliminator.

The SSP Dune Digger was released as the Sand Scorcher.

As far as I know, these were the only four vehicles released in Europe.

A few years ago, there was a warehouse find of REVRODS.

I recently bought a case of 12 (MIB) green Laker Specials for less than $200.00 shipped. (EBay)

The Eliminator and Sidewinder can also be found relatively cheap.

It's nearly impossible to find loose original 1970's SSP Racers in decent condition, and even harder to find them mint in box.

The green Laker Special was always my absolutely favorite SSP Racer.

I feel really fortunate to have been able to find a case of 12 for such a great price.

I remember thinking how cool Smash Up Derby looked from the TV commercial as a kid. Never owned it, though.

I stumbled across this on another site.

This memory was added on: January 9,2005

Even though I'm a girl, I loved playing w/ cars as well as my dolls. We lived near a Citgo Gas Station, and I remember they offered 6" SSP racers as a premium in 1971. I thought I was the coolest 5 year old around when my dad bought me a Blue Citgo Laker Special. I'd race it in the hallway of our apartment. The dog would keep away from me when she saw that thing! Me and my friends in kindergarten would drive our teachers nuts singing the Smash-Up Derby song! Hee-hee! I just got blue and red Citgo Laker specials from Ebay. Funny how they seem so much smaller than they did when I was 5. I took them to school, (I'm an after-school teacher), and my kids loved them! Some of them mentioned BeyBlades and I told them where did they think that idea came from? LOL! These cars rocked. LONG LIVE THE 70'S!

Ha! Yep, that's me. I think that was from the original Yesterdayland website. I really miss that site. I also used to post in Feeling Retro too. (Hmmm...maybe that's where it came from?) I can't remember, I used to post on lots of "retro" sites. Now it's here and Me-TV.
