This is what I am talking about...Are you kidding me with this??!!??

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/04/...edium=facebook

I say kudos to the seller that let it go and got this kind of stupid money...but really?? 90K for a book that is from the 60's and isn't FF 1 Spidey 1 Amazing Fantasy 15 Avnegers 1 or 4 Hulk 1??!!?? I don't care if it is the 1st appearance of Black Panther. That's just someone that has NO CLUE about collecting comics. It's also most likely someone that has never read a comic in their life...they just have a lot of expendable funds and don't want to put it in the banks or stock market. They are what I call "Crash and Burn" collectors. Unfortunately they also crash an burn the hobby for the fans/collectors/readers that actually care about comics. I like the one comment " what is guarantee you will get that 90 back?"

I'm betting this has nearly nothing to do with comics. All of these examples have a high rating from CGC. All of these examples are also 40 years old. If those two criteria are all you're worried about, then these would be considered rare and valuable.
What percentage of 40 year old Marvel Comics would score a 9.5 or above? I bet not very many.

I guessing that may be the mindset.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

There are people that collect grades. I don't get it, but if it makes them happy so be it. Some want certain covers, or just the comics by a particular art team. I've always been a reader/collector based on the characters. Condition doesn't really matter to me as long as it's not brittle.

But that's what I think is cool about comic book collecting. You can come at it from so many different directions.

I do think the guy that paid that much for the first Black Panther appearance is daffy, but he must have had someone bidding along with him. There is a historical significance to the book with BP being the first black super hero that might become even more significant as time goes on? While the book is in demand, it's not really that rare.

I've often thought a good way to launder money would be to spend it on collectibles.

^Stan didn't even write that comic...Roy Thomas did! Sure, Stan was EIC, but I wonder if the person thought he wrote it?

I've seen so many graded books on Ebay that Stan had absolutely NOTHING to do with go for stupid ridiculous money. Just re-enforces what I've been saying about the new collectors/speculators...also tells you that CGC will pimp anything. IMHO a book shouldn't even get a grade if the signee has nothing to do with said book. As long as there is $$$$$ to be made they will do it unfortunately...but there has to be an audience for it. If the newer collectors weren't speculators and were actual READERS of the books this wouldn't be a problem. I still find absolutely IDIOTIC that a reprint could command that kind of money.

I'm convinced now more than ever that it's not at all about the comic itself.

Yep. It is a late 70's early 80's reprint. That's part of the reason why I posted it. For almost the same ending price of the reprint, a 9.8 CGC copy, you can get a 6.5 CGC copy of the ORIGINAL 1st printing of Avengers 57. I don't know about anyone else...but I'd rather have an original Avengers 57 in basically what amounts to a Fine condition then a 70's/80's reprint. Call me crazy

Ugh. Before Avengers came out I was watching an auction for a Treasury Thor. Guy had it signed by Kirby. I was going to have Stan sign it the next month. Life occurred and I blanked on the auction. I think it went for about 40...
