Full disclosure - one of the first artists I followed deeply was Phil Collins. I was in grade 7 when No Jackets Required came out and I LOVED that album. I didn't understand punk or even most classic hard rock until high school where I was set on the right path by kids who were much cooler than I was. After a while some of them even spoke to me - sometimes.

None of my comments were meant to be critical of fans of Captain & Tennille.

                  They're new to me anyway.

That last one is a live thing on KEXP, which as far as I can tell, must be the coolest station in the world. They showcase lots of new bands of every style... usually rock or alternative, but sometimes they play stuff that is really out there. Anyway, their youtube is a great follow to find new or even forgotten bands.

And now for some stuff that no one will like...

I have to admit that I kind of dropped out of following even the very niche/underground stuff I was into about 15 years ago to focus on digging up obscure/unknown 70s/80s records instead (a hobby I basically retired from a couple of years ago), and these days I mostly stick to my old favorites. But here are a few from more recent times in various genres I've been involved with over the years:

                      Metal:

These three groups are all interrelated to each other, and are more or less still active (I think). I dropped out of the metal scene entirely after about '94, when it had really turned to crap, but I was a founding member of the early '90s old-school doom/death band that eventually morphed into Evoken, and I think I contributed a couple of song titles and maybe even a riff or two (which had been written way back during the old scene days and then resurrected for reuse) to Funebrarum. Disma is also made up of guys from our old local NJ/NYC scene, and is quite similar. Anyway, all of these bands are fairly popular and well-respected within their own metal underground niche:

                      Funebrarum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyjQ3gtIxyQ
                      Evoken: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLQ8yU8Nb1Y
                      Disma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR7I9PBeCsM

                      Prog Rock:

These bands are a mix of standouts from the original '90s prog revival who have remerged with strong albums, and a couple of younger artists as well:

                      Anglagard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45uZcuMawTA
                      Happy Family: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45uZcuMawTA
                      Corima: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXJ_rWsuARs
                      Phlox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZC4MGBMYmM

                      Drum & Bass:

In the mid/late '90s, I got very into the DNB and electronica scene mainly coming out of the UK, especially the dark, futuristic "tech step" sound of artists like Ed Rush & Optical, Dom & Roland, etc. The golden age for that stuff was relatively brief, as it was always a rapidly changing scene, but a few of the old guard still make some bangin' tracks from time to time that are always fun to listen to:

                      Dom & Roland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0XUULwxPyc
                      Technical Itch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GToDvvfdW_E
                      Current Value: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnbUGcDZa_E

My parents were very much of the "cool" variety (my father was a professional jazz drummer who loved '70s jazz-rock/fusion and progressive rock, and my mother was heavily into the '60s psychedelic rock and soul scenes), and I got into the more underground side of the '80s metal scene at a relatively early date, so my tastes have always been pretty non-mainstream. I did like the old hip-hop scene as well, but only from about '84-'92, and mostly east coast acts. Once the G-funk sound took over the west coast around '93, and east coast favorites like EPMD and Eric B. & Rakim were replaced by newer acts like Wu Tang and Nas, I pretty much faded out and never returned.

That's interesting, when I was 7th grade I got really into another Genesis front man, Peter Gabriel's "Security" album. That also didn't work so good in with the "lumberjack jacket/Triumph shirt with the white sleeves" crew in high school.

My favorite Genesis-related thing is Phil Collins' classic '70s jazz fusion band Brand X. Shows what a nerd I am...

Here's one more current band in the retro prog/psych vein, but who are definitely more popular and perhaps more appealing to a wider audience. Dungen:

These guys are one of the only prog/psych groups who have gotten a bit of mainstream media attention/airplay in recent times, and they've been consistently excellent. They have real "prog nerd" bona fides, too. Guitarist Reine Fiske came from one of the original early '90s Swedish prog-revivalists, Landberk, and has recently played with cool Norwegian prog/fusion group Elephant9. I still remember when me and my prog geek friends almost keeled over when they actually got to perform on Conan O'Brien a number of years back!

Even if you think you don't like progressive or psychedelic rock, you should really give these guys a chance. Just beautiful music and atmosphere.

                              Another from their new album:
