Another "new to me" artist that I've been getting into over the last year. I admit, I initially dismissed Rival Sons as too Led Zeppelin/70's derivative, but after going back to listen to them again, they are a pretty good band carrying on the 70's rock style. I'm going to go see them next month.

    WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

I listen to streaming music on Amazon mostly now. So a lot of my choices are limited to that. I like modern folk music.

Brandi Carlile, The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Death Cab for Cutie, Family of the Year, The Lumineers

I also like musicals- partly for the music , but it is also like listening to a story while at work. As far as newer ones go I did not like Hamilton the first time I listen to it, but it grew on me and now it is one of my favorites. Also currently have the soundtrack to Wicked in my CD player in the van.

But I also try to Surf around some. I like country musician Zac Brown, pop musician Ingrid Michaelson, I like lots of songs by lots of people on lots of genres. I hate to limit myself to old hat

I've started really digging "The Brian Jonestown Massacre" it reminds me a lot of "The Jesus and the Mary Chain" which I'm also fond of. They're of course just new to me, they've been around a while.

I'm a huge BJM fan as well as JAMC. Fortunately they have both played Toronto twice in the past few years. BJM sometimes play marathon shows of two hours plus which is fun. I'm always digging up new (to me) bands from the past/present, that's part of the fun of rock and roll.

Cool! Their name was always such a groaner to me that it was a bit of a turn off, but I revisited them because of Boardwalk Empire's opening theme and I liked a lot of it. I'm probably due for another tour of their stuff.

I can't remember if we talked about them - but do you know Moon Duo or Wooden Shjips? (< not a typo)

Glad you discovered them. Have you seen the DIG documentary, which I highly recommend? The story behind BJM and The Dandy Warhols rivalry. Not a big fan of either but I did catch the Dandys open up for Love and Rockets many years back before they split up. Great show. I love JAMC. Big fan since '85 when I first heard them on Rodney on the ROQ, which was on Sunday nights. Come Monday morning, I immediately when to Rene's All Ears Records on Melrose and bought their first single, Upside Down b/w Vegetable Man. Few weeks later Just Like Honey came out as a single and I was hooked. Didn't get to see them play live that year since the Roxy gig was 21 an over only and the Santa Monica Civic show was sold out. The lineup was Butthole Surfers, Specimen, and JAMC. JAMC played for 20 minutes I heard. Longer than the Roxy show the night before for only 15 minutes.
Funny thing is the following year, my friends and I would go record shopping after school on Melrose and we ran into Jim and William record shopping. Surreal experience. They were in town to master the new album. Managed to catch all their shows after that.
Worst show was when they did at showcase for Sub Pop records, their new label and who released their then last studio album, MUNKI. It was an acoustic show and Jim showed up majorly drunk. Almost puked a few times on stage. William was really upset with him at this point and they ended up arguing on stage and William left. Needless to say a short show. Didn't go to the after party as I was pretty much upset about the show but my friends got to hang out with William who pretty much stated that this was their last album. Glad they made up and released a great album since.
I like BJM for the fact that they gave us Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Imajinary Friends, Enrique Maymi's band. Most sweetest and down to earth guy I've met. Next to Roderick Romero from Sky Cries Mary.

Agreed. The best part is always discovering new music and I work with a younger guy than me who just discovered The Cure and Clan of Xymox. I turned him onto other 4AD bands and some early 80's post punk bands like The Chameleons. He loved it. Best feeling in the world.

Love Moon Duo. My wife and I love that band and went to their first Seattle show at a hole in a wall bar. It was perfect and mesmerizing. Wooden Shjips are great too and love Ripley's voice and sound. Have you checked out Psychic Ills? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMljPLpFUMA
What I've been digging lately is The Rose City Band, Portland band, which was produced by Ripley Johnson. Think of Moon Duo meets The Dead but more country sounding. Came out in May and is the best Summer record for me. Check it out:

Their vinyl release has since long sold out in less than a month.
Another band I've been listening to is the new Bleached album. Pretty good stuff as is their entire catalog. Very L.A. garage girl band pop sounding. I like it. Here is a mix playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--PG...&start_radio=1

Gina Volpe (ex-LUNACHICKS, BANTAM) is doing some interesting solo stuff these days, a mash-up of rock, blues, dance/hip-hop beats, psych, etc. Very different from her punk rock past but the attitude is still there.
