I love horror movies, and will watch most of them with little problem, but the Cannibal subgenre is a real turn-off for me. Is this the one that shows scenes of animal cruelty? That's an absolute dealbreaker for me.

^ That was the original Cannibal Holocaust.

Part-2 is nothing like what the first was... (no animal executions etc)

Part-2 is so bad it's laughable --- The cannibals in two are clearly European actors --- and the dubbing is so funny (it's dubbed like the old Speed Racer where they talk real fast)

A friend sprung part one on me "you have to see this!", I wish I could "unsee" that movie.

You'll have to explain how you got from "laughable" to "clearly European actors", Mike...

Watched the original as comparative exercise in the Found Footage genre on the heals of seeing the Blair Witch Project in the 90's.

Not my cup of tea. I find the cannibal sub genre... distasteful.

              I have trouble swallowing it.

              it's not very palatable.

              I don't hunger for it.

it would be biting off more than I could chew.

It's not a buffet of the senses for me.

Not a meal I like to partake in.

Something just eats away at me when I think about it.

If it wasn't for the onscreen animal killing Cannibal Holocaust really wasn't such a bad movie.

If you sit there and watch it you start rooting for the cannibals, which is a nice switch from what you'd expect if you've never seen it.

Most people that never seen it expect to see cannibals eating white people and done

I've never seen the sequel, but man the original film was legendary back in my tape trading days in the 1990's, especially if you could get your hands on an uncut copy. The animal death scenes are really tough to watch, I'm not defending them in any way, but I think that their purpose was to make the viewer think "Wow, if these scenes of violence are real, what else in this film is?!?". It almost blurred the lines of reality a bit, along with the "found footage" aspect of the film. Hell, the director Ruggero Deodato was even hauled in to court and had to prove that one of the actresses (the one impaled on a spike) wasn't actually killed in the film. Luckily he was able to produce the still very much alive actress and explained how the stunt was accomplished. There are aspects of the film I do like, including the gorgeous soundtrack music (which jarringly contrasts with the brutal ugliness of much of the film) and a cool acting appearance by Robert Kerman (aka porn star R. Bolla, who appeared in "Debbie Does Dallas" among others). I think I still the special edition DVD of CH in my collection somewhere, it was chock full of extras that help put things in perspective a bit.

The biggest complaint about the animal killing was the turtle, but most people don't realize they dispatched it very quickly right off the bat by beheading it.

All the gory movements and twitches it was making while being disemboweled was just nervous system reactions.

And the cast really did eat it after the camera's went off.

When you think about it Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods is filled with this kind of stuff.

Not trying to defend it, just thinking out loud

It's been a while since I watched it - didn't they also force a monkey to get killed by a snake or something?

I never saw part two - and wasn't a ginormous fan of part one.

They kill a number of animals in the film including a turtle and a monkey. It caused some charges of animal cruelty. A friend of mine defends the movie by saying that the tribal people in the film did in fact, eat all the animals killed and they were going to do it anyway.

I don't think the film deserves the bad rap for that part but I'm also in the "i don't need to see that twice" mindset.
