I think some of you guys are just being too nitpicky and looking for excuses not to like it. It may not be absolutely perfect and no movie can be. But in comparison to the prequels and other beloved classic properties Hollywood has defectated on (Transformers, GI JOE, Ninja Turtles, JEM) from what I've seen and read this movie is an absolute love letter to all that is good about SW.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I think Rey is actually Han and Leia's child and they're doing a rift on the Luke/Leia separation. Not twins, and maybe Leia/Han don't remember - Jedi mind tricks and all. Also, the names Rey/Ren have a very Yin/Yan aspect to them. For Abrams to use two such similar words has to be deliberate.

I also don't see where they fit Luke's family into his timeline. If he had a kid, it makes little sense why he would leave her behind at age five, knowing her force possibilities. Her age times out to when Ben wipes out the rest of his Jedi peers, so I think they're going to invert the relationships of father/son, brother/sister in the turning points.

And if Han becomes the disembodied voice....wow.

When they signed Michael B Jordan to play Fett, I thought he would end up as Lando's son. Lando had more interaction with Fett than anyone else in the series. So Lando has the armor as souvenir, the son adopted it after the destruction/loss of Cloud City, and now Fett gets to be an anti-hero in his stand alone movie instead of straight villain.

My guess is Luke kept Rey hidden, perhaps from Han and Leia, because they don't seem to know her...although a case could be made that they do. Star Wars characters are notorious for having good poker faces.

When he senses things are starting to go bad, he takes her away and leaves her on Jakku. Shortly thereafter, Ben goes Bat-Sith Crazy and kills all of Luke's Jedi students. Luke fears for Rey, and leaves her on Jakku, thinking that is what's best.

          But that's just my guess.

Didn't mind the reboot and retelling aspect, tho I did have to stifle a small groan when I saw another big destroyer machine. I was a bit disappointed as an old school fan to see how little screen time the big 3 had. Well, I guess Ford had his fair share and a limelight role and all, but Carrie and Mark were sort of cameos. I was hoping for something a little deeper from those two. Not even a spoken line in that last scene. Dam! Also was thinking that the traumatic daddy son scene could have gone a hundred different ways and Ford could still come back for his own cameo world. Guess that is not happening now.

Favorite part of the movie was when Rey and Finn were babbling and congratulating themselves. That brought me back to 1977 and the original character emotional schizophrenia.

The Lando angle would be too much for me. We already have Ren, and everyone is pretty sure Rey is Luke's kids...or a Skywalker in some way.

I can NOT remember the last time a movie moved me to tears like this. My family and friends (I saw it with an amazing circle of loved ones) kept asking me what I thought when the credits were rolling. I couldn't answer them because I literally was still weeping and could not find my voice.

This is an incredibly enjoyable and fun movie.

But I could have gone on living my life with Episode VI being the last, and they lived happily ever after.

I did not need to see such a beloved character die. I don't want to see any of my heroes die. It's better that they remain forever in our imaginations. I totally get it. He doesn't want to do more. But, when they showed Chewie piloting the Falcon alone, I just fell to pieces. I really came apart.

Kylo Ren: I think the point is he's not supposed to be as badarse as Vader. He's a punk who throws tantrums with his lightsaber (which I loved).

Luke Skywalker: Dear Lord, can we please, PLEASE see Luke kicking the snot out of the entire First Order in the next film?

Leia: So much better than I expected. Carrie Fisher is wonderful in this role.

Artoo: Again, I got choked up when Threepio mentioned he shut down when Luke disappeared. I always loved their bond. I was confused, however, on how Artoo suddenly woke up and they seemed to have all parts of the map they needed.

Finn, Rey, and Po are all WONDERFUL. They really have some great potential. The buddy scenes of Po and Finn need expansion in the next film. It was a shame they separated for most of this one. They had great buddy chemistry.

Captain Phasma: Surprised she remained helmeted.

The First Order: And this may be my biggest complaint... without Lucas at the helm, all the scenes showing the officers in the First Order felt very FanFilm to me. I'm not sure if it was the actors or lighting or what.

Yep, they made a very, very safe and somewhat redundant Star Wars film. But I want to see the next one right now.

Obviously Brian is the grand-poobah here, but yeah, that's why "spoiler" is in the thread title, so people who have seen the movie can talk about it without writing spoiler 20 times repeatedly with every post. If someone doesn't want to be spoiled, I think it's been made very plain this is not the thread for them.

Saw the film this afternoon in a theater with FIVE other people. I seriously think this thing might bomb..

I mostly enjoyed it and all the familiar themes, but can certainly understand and appreciate the "too derivative" argument.

Not sure how Finn can pick up a lightsaber and effectively battle someone who has trained with one for years and can use the force.. but that's just a nitpick that comes to mind..

Here's some thoughts about some of the questions above...

Ren isn't his given name, it's Ben. He's actually Kylo Ren, and the Ren part comes from the Knights of Ren, which is some kind of force sensitive order like the Sith.

I personally think Rey is Luke's daughter.

R2D2 waking up... Again points to Rey being Luke's daughter I think. R2 woke up when she was in the resistance base, maybe R2 knew that, or felt it.

Finn wielding a lightsaber... Well I don't feel he's a Force sensitive person(which I'm kind of glad he isn't because the trailers really lead you to believe that, even the poster did too), but he didn't exactly kick any butt while using it. He was a trained Stormtrooper, so it's not like he's just some random guy, he knows something.

Another thought, I'd like to have known more about the state of the galaxy. Why after 30 years was the resistance(Rebels) and the First Order(Empire) still operating basically the same as they were before.

Right. It's a reset with no given reason, other than it helps once again setup the heroes as underdogs.

Kylo Ren is roughly "outcast" in Chinese. Rey is "King" in Spanish. Diametrically opposed names, like Yin (female, sun), and Yang (male, shade). Yin/Yang in conflict is how life's energy, Tai-Chi, creates reality.

Not sure if you are joking or serious. It's already passed 100 million.
