What was the appeal of New Mutants run?

Funny, I got issue #3 in a multipack in Bi-Way and it not only turned me right off the book but mutants themselves. I have never purchased mutant related comics since then.

I also think I got into New Mutants by way of their appearance in the Firestar mini. I was absolutely convinced that she would join the team at the end of it (like the Cartoon origin). Not sure why that didn't happen.
