are there any special do's or don'ts when washing a suit and is normal washing powder or liquid ok to use.

Liquid is better. A little goes a long way. Try a little baby shampoo or really mild dish detergent. Squeeze out a little blob and work it into the fibers with a little water. Try rinsing in cold water, but don't leave it to soak. Once all the suds are gone and the water runs clear, blot dry with first a paper towel, then a clean fabric towel. Hand-washing in degreasing dish-soap with tepid water is a miracle worker.
