That's fine if it's explicit in the school's policy. In this case it was not explicit, they took the "no violence" policy and extrapolated on it. If they MEAN super-heroes, then they need that to be clear about that in their policy.

Wow, just... wow.
I read that article and I thought it was outrageous too. But, after thinking about it, I kinda get it. Today's superheroes are dark, very dark. A lot of the superhero movies are incredibly violent, and many superhero comics are no longer kid-friendly, even if they feature superheroes that we grew up with... they've changed to meet more cynical times.
Remember when "Superman" and "Batman" meant Super-Friends, George Reeves and Adam West, or the Gardner Fox version of the Justice League of America? When comics had a preachy message about peace and brotherhood and understanding, and talking out your differences? No longer. I admit that I really, really dislike Batman's new "Dark Knight" image, and I'm completely disgusted by Jared Leto's "modernized" take on the Joker. Give me the classic 1966 Batman show (esp. with Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Burgess Meredith), or Neal Adams' early 70's comics Batman.
I think it is somewhat understandable that schools don't want kids play-acting what they see in modern superhero movies. But it is really, really hard to differentiate between "modern superheroes" and "Silver-Age superheroes". One set can be looked upon as "unsuitable role models for children" and the other, "wholesome fun". So these schools put them all in the same bag and ban ALL superheroes.
I know, it sucks. I wish there was a way to let girls bring their classic Wonder Woman lunchboxes, yet avoid having kids play-act truly psycho Jokers and nihilistic Batmans at lunchtime.Comment

It's all ridiculous.
As a kid, I watched the Godfather, the Exorcist, the Wild Bunch, etc. I grew up with guns around me. I read Playboy (for the articles of course, lol)...and I didn't turn into a gangster, I wasn't possessed, I didn't pursue a gunfighter career, I didn't go into porn, and blah, blah, blah, blah...all hogwash...heck, the most criminal thing I've ever done was two speeding tickets in my early 20s, yeah, maybe it was due by watching too much Speed Racer, I dunno, lol. It's not the so called dark and violent cartoons that turn kids into little criminals...it's bad parenting...and in some cases, mental instability...and I'll even go down to social economic upbringing...but let's stop blaming friggin superheroes, come one...please...silly, silly, silly...sigpicComment

Did anyone here ever wear a t-shirt or take toys to school from a film called 'Star WARS'? I think I may have even had a lunchbox funnily enough.Comment

I remember them allowing pocket knives in my elementary school
A few times a few kids came in fully done up for hunting because their father was picking them up and going hunting straight after school --- we're talking like 5th 6th graders
They did at least leave their rifles in dads truck while at schoolComment

Thank you. And yes, we promote peaceful conflict resolution. And yeah, we gotta go along w/ all the PC stuff too, b/c sadly. that's the word we live in. And y'know, I could get all crazy when you guys talk about the policies at your kids schools at Christmas time, not being able to wear red and green or holiday shirts, or using the word Christmas at all, but that's your school's policy. I may not agree w/ it, but I respect that we don't just get to follow the rules we like in this world. That's what we need to teach kids. Whether it's school uniforms, policies on superheroes, or Christmas, or staying after school 'cos you've done something wrong, or chewing gum in class or whatever. We as a civilized people have to live by rules, whether we like them or not. And being a law abiding member of society begins by following these kinds of rules as kids.
It's interesting. Thanks for sharing your school's perspective on this. It's not a public school, so they can make their own rules. I don't necessarily agree with it, but that's their right to do. I think it has less to do with political correctness and more to do with promoting peaceful conflict resolution in a community, where (perhaps) violence might be a problem. It's easy for us fanboys to do a knee jerk outrage reaction to this, but until you've been a teacher in public (or private) education, you may not fully appreciate just how ... scary it can be, even with little ones."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

What I find kind of ironic about this whole story (if it is an actual story and not a hoax as some are now saying it is) is that this school (which we know nothing about) will not let a little girl bring her vintage, innocuous WW lunchbox to school, but Hobby Lobby, a store with a decidedly religious bent, is selling all kinds of superhero stuff these days.sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.Comment

It's a good thing I don't have children. This would be the lunchbox I'd have my daughter bring in the next time.

I would hope that the ban would extend to the following, just off the top of my head: Police Officers, Police uniforms, Security Officers, Security Officer uniforms, Firefighters (especially the ones who break down doors with really big axes to save little children), Soldiers, Military uniforms and camouflage clothing, images of U.S. Presidents....
