A rare Saturday post from me.
This group of customs happened by sheer accident.
I was following a link on Facebook a few months back that stated the Dr Wells on the Flash television show may be based on a Dr Wells from the Super Friends. In season 4, episode 3 there is a "short" called "Elevator to Nowhere" whose villain is a Dr Wells. One and the same? Who knows? But, subsequently I discovered another short in the same episode entitled, "Rock 'N' Roll Space Bandits".
Not sure if you have ever seen this particular episode, so let me warn you that it could very well be the single most unwatchable episode in Super Friends history. Yet the villains, the Rock 'N' Roll Space Bandits, were begging to be made into custom Megos.
The only link to the episode on youtube requires a payment of $1.99. I have the episode on my Amazon Prime account. The RnRSB's invade earth and use their music to paralyze the Super Friends, hypnotize earth's citizens, and even tear down buildings. The Pied Piper wishes he had their power.
Here is a screen capture from the episode:
and here they are in Mego form:
They are all built on Dr Mego swivel-arm bodies so they can hold their instruments well; all clothing (suits and capes) by me; all colored hands and platform shoes from CTVT with paints by me; all heads from the 1970s Tomland Star Raiders line (Dagon, Morlock, and Zhor) painted by me (original heads from Guyx1 who allowed me to mold and cast them); all instruments by Laser Mego.
I took some artistic liberties with these guys. I added capes and collars to all of them in order to make them more "consistent" and "uniform". I also chose the Tomland heads I thought most resembled them but did not alter them in any way. I did this in order to keep that Star Raider feel to them. An homage if you will to an under-appreciated line of action figures from my youth.
Original Dagon:
Original Morlock:
Original Zhor:
Painfully, I re-watched this episode to see if they had names. I can hear only one being referred to by name and that is the red and orange bandit. His name is Vivo. So I have decided to re-name them
Moe
Larry
Curly
Here they are battling the Super Friends individually:
Here are some screen caps from the episode:
While Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman & Robin are all paralyzed in outer space the Wonder Twins decide to come to Earth's rescue: "Shape of a giant lobster. Form of a ice satellite dish." Seriously? Who came up with THAT?!?!?!
For their brilliant colors and their incredible degree of obscurity these customs are easily some of my favorites. And, they could not have been possible without the incredible generosity of Guyx1 lending me the heads and the unrivaled talent of PMWasson aka Laser Mego and his help with the instruments. A "thank you" will forever be insufficient.
I hope you enjoy my customs as much as I do, and, as always, thank you for looking!
Peace, Love, and Megos!
