What ever happened to novelizations of movies?

I remember back in the day there were novelizations of all the movies that came out. I have/had all 3 Star Wars books, the Star Trek movie books, Batman, the Indiana Jones movies and others but now there aren't any books of movies. A few years ago I looked around for a novelization of Marvel's Avengers and now I looked for Age of Ultron but the only thing even close to the old days are "junior novel" books that don't get great reviews.

So when did making novelizations of movies stop and why?

I think Disney does or used too, but not sure.

As with so many things, I blame the internet, Millennials, and housefly-sized attention spans.

Nobody reads anything but NYT bestelling series now. And badly-written fan slashfic masquerading as fiction.

Print is dead---movies, not so much.

The last movie novelization that I read was Noah. They used to be big on the newsstands around here but they seem scarce now.

I never thought about it, but yeah, you just don't see these anymore, it's a shame. I loved reading them when I was a kid, anything by Alan Dean Foster was gold IMO. I remember reading his novelizations of Alien, Outland and The Thing before I even saw the actual films!

There was a novelization for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (Summer 2014), so they are still being done, just probably not to the extent that they used to be...

Had so many novelizations of movies when I was a kid... Star Wars, Raiders, The Black Hole, Dragonslayer, Alien, The Thing, Clash of the Titans, Galactica, CE3K, E.T., The Sword and the Sorcerer, Flash Gordon, Jaws 2, etc.

The two most recent novelizations I read were Man of Steel and Pacific Rim.
                  PUNY HUMANS!

I did a book report in 9th grade based on the Black Hole novelization.

                    Ah the good ol days.

Alan Dean Foster did one for the 2009 Star Trek.
                      It's all good!

The Black Hole novelization begins at Christmas time, and the crew is on board the Palomino using the internet to shop for gifts for family members on Earth. This was 1979.

I used to LOVE those! As well as the graphic novel tie-ins.

I remember the British version of the Avengers movie (hated that movie!) and the book was infinitely more interesting than the actual film! THAT'S bad!

Of course, the popularity of the book also depends upon the ability of the writer. Some of them were good, others were merely passable, and a few were bad. Very, very bad.

I remember I had one of the horror flick The Funhouse when I was a teen. Way better than the movie!
