Trying to remember some Universal monster books from middle school

Back when I was in middle school around 1985-'89 I would sometimes skip lunch and go to the library. There were these thin Universal Monsters books I would often like to thumb thru to pass time with. I dont remember much about them and thought maybe someone here might have a clue of what it was. I would really like to see them again if its even possible.

They were thin hardbacks geared toward young adults. There was seperate books for each monster. They got into bits about the characters and had a bunch of photo stills from the movies.

I read these books in the mid-80s but they could have been much older. Not much to go with, I know, but I was thinking maybe there was a slight chance someone was familiar with them.

My searches havent really came up with anything and I'm having a hard time remembering them.

They were published by Crestwood House in 1977. Most if not all were written by Ian Thorne. I've got the entire collection stashed away somewhere. They came in softcovers also.

I loved those books. When I was in elementary school, the librarian told us we need our parents permission to check them out... because they were so scary, they could give you nightmares. As you can imagine, that made them the most popular books in the whole library.

Thanks for the info. Sure enough these are the books I would spend 30 minutes many days with. I might eventually try getting some of these. I'm glad they are well known about.

I would also recommend Great "Monsters of the Movies" by Edward Edelson, "Super Monsters" by Daniel Cohen, and the greatest monster book of them all, "Movie Monsters" by Alan Ormsby.

Cindy brought home some discarded Crestwood House books from her library several years ago, right as our son got into the Universal Monsters. Those things are fantastic, and I wish I had found them as a kid.

                            the Ormsby book was fantastic.

I spent a week making the paper bag Frankenstein - wish I had a picture of the results.

This was a favorite monster book for me during the mid 70's...
