    movies

    So;

I saw a couple of good doccumentaries recently:

-Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. Shows what happens when people don't ask the right questions....

-Metal: A Headbangers Journey. Even if you don't like the music, this was a FANTASTIC explanation of why so many people do. (The "alcohol and interviews don't mix" interview is pretty funny too... as long as you don't mind barely coherent drunken swearing with a heavy European accent...)

    Anyone else see these?

I've seen parts of "Metal" here and there on VH1 and VH1 Classic. Very well done, but the interviews with the European metal bands that advocate burning down churches were downright chilling. Scary people. These guys make Ozzy look like Mr. Rogers.

I've seen the Enron movie. Being a CPA, it really is amazing that Enron's auditors allowed them to get away with such stuff without at least disclosing it in their financials.

Corporations always have ways of trying to make their financials look better than they really are which is why it is so important to require full disclosure.

The Enron film really gives some great insight into how bad decisions happen. Another good documentary deals with Coke's decision to create and release New Coke.

A couple of other good documentaries-
'Control Room' - This really shows how the govt and news organizations impact how we see the world. It follows the crews of Al Jezeera as they make their decisions about news.

'Dogtown and Z-Boys' - This really took me back to when skateboarding swept the country in the 70's. I was a skater back then and again in the 80's so this was particularly interesting for me.
    WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

Okay, guys... I watch tons of movies, and I especially like documentaries. Here's some stuff from just the last two weeks. All of these are highly recommended:

    Who Killed the Electric Car?
30 Days (season 1) - really more of a reality show than a documentary
The Cult of the Suicide Bomber
    The Boys of Baraka
    Death in Gaza
    Brother Born Again
    The Education of Shelby Knox
    Why We Fight
    The Road to Guantanamo
Gitmo: The New Rules of War
    The Ground Truth
    Winter Soldier

From what I got out of the film; the problem was that nobody stopped to ask WHERE the money was coming from. Except one person, and they got fired. A friend explained that a similar thing caused the "dot com" burst in the 90's... internet company stock was trading for amounts there was no way they could match in returns. When folks caught on it all tanked.

Once upon a time folks used to believe that if it SOUNDED too good to be true, it probably was.

    >Why We Fight

THIS one was good too. Another good one is "The Power of Nightmares."

    >but the interviews with the European metal bands that advocate burning down churches were downright chilling. Scary people.

....until you see Alice Cooper's comments about them....

Another really creepy doccumentary is the three part series "The Corporation." Twenty minutes into the future my heinie.... it's mnore like five minutes ago.
