1979 Universal Monster Lunchbox (America and Canada version)

Finally picked up the Canadian Version of this Lunchbox! One of my favorites in my collection

American Version is the metal lunchbox. Canadian version only came in the plastic version and only had the one picture on the front.

    Just beautifully done!

BEAUTIFUL! I always wanted this lunchbox back in '79 when I was 9 and would see it in Yocum Elementary School cafeteria! I had the 70s Aladdin Marvel Comics metal lunchbox which I later sold on ebay for $50! Mistake!

I also wanted Dukes of Hazzard and Welcome Back Kotter lunchboxes!

I see they used the Glen Strange Frankenstein image and the Chaney Jr. Mummy image,
we're they not able to get the license for the Karloff images? I like the Strange image anyways
and the Chaney Mummy seems to be more popular. Most Universal monsters memorabilia images
use the Strange images for Frankenstein, but it's Karloff whom people remember the most playing
the monster, just thought it was strange ( pardon the pun) that Karloff's image was not used more
          at the time.

^It seems to go back and forth. Most of the 60s merchandise is Strange as Frankenstein's Monster, and Chaney as Kharis. From the 90s on, it usually seems to be Karloff.

This lunchbox is truly one of the best designs of all time. But it's always perplexed me about "Igor". The actual Universal film version was spelled Ygor, and was the bearded, broken neck character played to perfection by Bela Lugosi. This looks more like Fritz from the original Frankenstein film, played by Dwight Frye.

Oh well. Aladdin's Super Friend lunchbox features a one-time character, Kitten, who only appeared in the first storyline in the Super Friends comic.

I love the merchandise that has Strange on it. Such classic images from my childhood.

I remember a friend in elementary school having that thermos as a replacement for the one he lost for his Star Wars lunch box. I was envious of him having it, loved the creature as a kid (still do). I don't think I have ever seen the box itself before. Ryan

Believe it or not, there's a new metal, fully painted and embossed Universal Monster lunchbox coming this year, complete with thermos that blows the original away. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this...apparently the back is a completely different image also, but hasn't been shown yet.

I have to say, the new metal Universal Monster lunchbox looks very nice, but seems very busy on the front with all the monsters bunched in one. I would love to see the back of the lunchbox. The simplicity and art of the 1979 version is far superior to the new one.

Gotta disagree with you on this one...I saw better pics of the new one back during toyfair. The artwork is incredible and definitely trumps the 1979 version IMO.

I hope we're seeing a new trend and there are more new lunchboxes coming.

Nice get, I think we had a thing against Metal lunchboxes for kids around here. All mine were plastic.
