My favorite all time was the Destructor. I bought the first issue and was hooked! Now Captain Canuck joins him on that list!
Archie Goodwin was the writer, Steve Ditko on the pencils, and Wally Wood did the inks. Classic stuff.
I liked Jon Sable, Freelance by Grell, and Charlton's version of E-Man. The Atlas comics line was ok, I still have the series The Cougar around somewhere.
DNAgents, E-Man, Modern Comics Charlton reprints were how I discovered those characters originally. I remember finding one of those multipacks at KMart.

I was a fan of indy books...not so much the superhero type of stuff though. My bro already mentioned Jon Sable, Starslayer, and Dreadstar. I'd add to the list characters like Warp by Frank Brunner. Elflord by Aircel. Elfquest by Richard and Wendi Pini. Used to love anthology type of stuff like Star Reach and Star Reach Classics. AC had some great stuff like Night Veil and Captain Paragorn as well as Blue Beetle before DC got their hands on him. Wally Woods Thunder Agents and Evangeline. So much great stuff that came out back then. Still have a lot of that stuff in my collection. Used to love going to Forbidden Planet uptown to find the latest new indys out. Stuff like Adventures of Luther Aarkwright and Red Fox. I miss finding stuff like that these days. Everything now is hyped to hell before it even comes out and it eventually disappoints all the time.
I think I was exactly the right age to enjoy Zot! as it transitioned from a fun action adventure 4-colour Superhero, into a much more grounded black and white personal drama. I got hooked on the superheroes at the right age and the comic seemed to mature with my tastes in comics.
I first started reading Grendel with the Christine Spar series, which I enjoyed a great deal, along with the collected version of Hunter Rose from the Mage Backups. Looking back though, my favourite incarnation of Grendel was this one...
1. The Rocketeer
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in glorious black and white
3. American Flagg
4. Grendal
5. Nexus
6. Dreadstar
7. Badger
8. Mage the hero
9. Flaming Carrot
10.Miracleman
My Fav non hero book hands down is Love and Rockets...
