My son is in 3rd Grade and has to do a monthly report on a variety of topics.

The month of February was Black History Month, so they did reports about Famous Black people. Well this month it's Famous Women in History.

My son selected a woman by the name of Caroline Herschel.

I'm not very familiar with Caroline Herschel so I did what any parent would do and googled it.

Now imagine that my son has to stand-up in front of his class and do a presentation of his report about Caroline Herschel.

My son's opening line to his report was:

"My report is about Caroline Herschel who was famous for discovering Uranus."

I almost fell out of my chair!!!

Now my son is pretty young and niave and really doesn't know what is so funny...so he'll probably believe that his classmates will be laughing at him as oppose to laughing at what he said.

I felt it was my duty (don't laugh) to convince my son to do his report on someone else.

Don't these teacher's know what is going to happen when they throw out something like this?! My god, did they forget what it was like to be a kid?!

I was there to save my child...I hope this helps other parents on this board avoid having their child scarred for life.

Your son certainly had a "bum" deal with that assignment....Badum....Did Caroline Herschel "brown" nose her way to the top...tisch!.....Did she ever "rear" her own children.....badum...thank you...i'm here all week.

Caroline Herschel didn't discover Uranus; her brother William did. So really, that need not have been brought up. And even if it was, you could've coached him to pronounce it the preferred way of "Uran-us", which may or may not have elicited some giggles. I doubt it would have.

Caroline Herschel did have some nice discoveries of her own - among them eight comets, six of which bear her name.

Just google black women or something like that. There are a lot of names that he'll have an easier time finding info.

While my wife and I were dating in college, I once helped her practice for her oral report on Tasidus, the Greek historian. Everytime she mentioned Tasidus famous anals of history I blurted out "Huh-huh, you said a-nals", Butt-Head style. Hey it was 1994!

Well guess what she slipped up and said REPEATEDLY during her report?

I still get flack about it, even today.

I think your son should do the report, and throw in some fictions about Klingons around Uranus.
