Pod Stallions Episode 26: The Retro Awards

We're back and we're launching our first episode of 2015 resurrecting the Retro Awards.

For those not familiar with the Retro Awards, it's a celebration of things that came out in the last year (for this show we've slid into 2013 a l'il bit) that we feel rocked a 70s vibe.

Of course along the way we get terribly sidetracked and discuss the Hudson brothers, Planet of the Apes, Doctor Who annuals, Herve Villechez and Tim Burton's Batman. Surprising we're still better at hosting awards shows than James Franco...

Nice picks there. I was nodding my head a lot, as usual.

I just watched the documentaries on the Batman 89 Blu-Ray (the one you mentioned that comes with the NECA figure) with my son, and I was explaining how huge the hype was, and how big the Keaton controversy got. You guys came to a lot of the same conclusions I did. Someone on that documentary said something that really put things into focus for me for the first time. If Burton hadn't cast someone like Keaton, with his flair for comedy, and his "crazy eyes", the general public wouldn't have bought the concept of a serious Batman. Once they sold it, they could put anyone in the suit (and did). But you had to have that half-crazed guy first, because it wasn't a farce like West portrayed.

I'm going to have to find that book on the comic ads. I had no idea something like that existed. Color me sold!

I'll have to check out The Man from Harlem the way it was meant to be seen (with a bottle of vodka)

Sounds like you're on an Apes kick Brian. The Neca Taylor is one of the gems of the mego revival.

It's been a good year for Apes stuff!

Guy from Harlem is so inept you keep expecting hardcore pornography but it never arrives!

Its on in its entirety on the tube. I'd prefer the untouched version, I can make my own observations and jokes. But we can thank MST3000 for bringing notoriety to some long lost films like Pumaman and The Girl in gold boots. Gold Boots has the hilarious teleporting scene where the man joins the conversation at the table.

The new POTA book is brilliant and beautiful. I read some early reviews that nitpicked the content was available elsewhere… bahh, you'd be hard pressed to find such a great collection of bright, clear pics, behind the scenes goodies and an excellent read. A great companion piece to the Handley books!

Props to the MM for providing content and having a credit line. More proof that this place continues to grow and have influence beyond.

I have no memory of that but life was a blur last year, what did we provide?
