    Kenner's SWAMP THING...a perfect toyline?

Every once in a while a toyline is released that is just so well done it's hard to imagine any way it could be better. I think Kenner's Swamp Thing collection from 1990 falls into this category. A perfect combination of superhero and monster, the line had a total of 12 figures, 3 vehicles, and 2 playsets, making it the perfect size. It offered a whole lot of play value, while staying small enough that kids really could "collect them all" without their parents going bankrupt. The toys are not really based off the comics or movies, but rather the short lived (but awesome) animated series. The toyline also had really cool commercials filmed in black and white live action like old 1950's monster movies.

Swamp Thing himself was released in 6 different variants with 4 unique sculpts. Each figure has it's own incredibly well done action feature similar to Kenner's Super Powers line. There is Snare Arm Swamp Thing, Snap-Up Swamp Thing, the GITD cactus like Bio-Glow Swamp Thing, color-changing Camouflage Swamp Thing, Capture Swamp Thing, and Climbing Swamp Thing. Normally I don't care for so many variants of the main character, but the figures here are all so different and unique it doesn't bother me at all.

There were also 2 human allies, Bayou Jack and Tomahawk, and 4 evil "Un-Men"...Anton Arcane, Skin-Man, Dr. Deemo, and Weed Killer rounding out the 12 figures. Each Un-Men figure comes with a translucent "Bio-Mask" to further mutate their monster forms. The vehicles are amazingly cool fusions of machine and plant matter, and are some of the best vehicle sculpts ever done.
There were Swamp Thing's Bog Rover and Marsh Buggy, and Arcane's Bayou Blaster. Lastly there were the playsets, both amazingly done. Swamp Thing's Swamp Trap was a larger more impressive version of Kenner's Dagobah set. It features a working elevator to pop Swamp Thing up out of the bog, Venus fly trap monster, foam quicksand, tree snare, and just looks great on the shelf.
Lastly there was the Transducer playset. This thing is incredibly cool, and is cousin to the Remco Monsterizer. It is really elaborate, with dungeon-like base, rotating lab table, green liquid vat of monster juice, and even comes with a mutated giant insect figure! What's not to love?

I highly recommend this toyline to any superhero or monster fan. They can be easily found on the secondary market and are just incredibly well done and fun toys. I'll be uploading pics of the entire collection soon.

There was something about the line, that's for sure. I was way too old to play with these, but I couldn't help but pick up the Snare-Arm Swamp Thing and Arcane. They did seem like distant cousins to Super Powers, and mixed in well with Kenner's Dark Knight Collection Batman movie line. The rubber monster heads were a nice throw-back to kitschy monster toys of yore. Kenner's stuff was still top-notch at the time. I only wished they'd expanded to a whole DC line in this scale and style at the time. Super Powers 2.0, if you will.

I was in first year University when these came out, something very charming about them and I actually bought the whole line on close out a year later.

I love this line. I have five of the Swamp Things. I need to get the rest (especially Arcane) at some point. Big time Swamp Thing Fan!

I forgot to mention there's a rare variant of the Camouflage Swamp Thing figure. The figure is sculpted to look like wood, and is molded in dark brown plastic with a bright green color-changing paint app that turns brown in cold temps.
The first figures produced had a very elaborate paint mask that covered most of the upper body and traveled down onto the arms. This was quickly changed to a much smaller paint mask which covered only his head and upper torso.

Hmm, it looks like I have the later variant, without the apps on the arms.
Camouflage Swamp Thing is one of the best sculpts not only in the line, but in that entire era of Kenner toys.

I love this line, I collected it just after I graduated from college. I was so smitten with the Transducer playset, I wrote to Kenner & nabbed an extra mantis-monster figure. "Cause Arcane needs more monsters!

I have a complete set--Dwayne's synopsis captures my feeling exactly and Chris is spot-on about the line's Superpowers vibe.

I need to check my Camo ST figure--I suspect I have the later version :-(
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I wish I had room for more playsets, but the Super Powers Hall of Justice is really the only one that stays on permanent display anymore.

As promised, here are some pics of all the Swamp Thing figures, including the Camouflage variants. I'll add more pics tomorrow. Also below is one of those great monster movie themed commercials for the line!
