You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
^It scares the crap out of me as well. It's one reason I tackled these, to prove to myself I could still do it, and still handle a paint brush. Plus, I've just had a ball with it. Very relaxing, if slightly frustrating.

Try tracing basic shapes over the faces until you get the hang of it...it really does work. Likenesses used to scare me too, but in the end, it's all just shapes...once you've mastered that, then you can focus more on the small details. Do you use acrylics?
I work dark to light, and paint very small areas at a time. Sometimes it helps if I write down a list of what colors I used also, in case I need to go back and remix one later.
Yeah, if you break the face into shapes, it's much less intimidating. I did that here, and did spot the blacks once I got the piece down in pencil. Being more of a pencil and ink guy, I'm always afraid I'll blow the whole thing in the painting phase.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the kind words. I'm debating on which Universal Monster to tackle next, now that I've done the Big 3. The Bride? The Mummy? The Creature? Creech doesn't require nailing a "likeness". Hmm...
