Sears Space Command Center and Sound Studio

This oddity from 1979 was a generous gift from my pal John, it's one of those things that Sears stuck in their catalogs to sell along side other licensed toys. This one tries for all the marbles, trying to get some Star Wars heat and the 12" celebrity doll craze. More pics after the jump!:

Like I said, it's one half recording studio (with working microphone) and the other half is a spacey mission control. IT'S TWO THINGS!

Brick can record his next hit single.

Or Commander Mantooth can make sure the galaxy is safer. OK, this set is obviously scaled for larger figures and Brick's outfit is far too tight but it all doesn't matter because

    GREEN SLIME! RUN!

PS You get bonus points if you can name the action figure making a cameo on the box.

That might be Brick's outfit from the stage production of Flesh Gordon he performed in. I believe the figure on the box is Mr. Action?

Brick vs the Green Slime ... love it. I'd pay to see that.

But the combo of a sound studio and space command center always confounded me. WHo at Sears thought there was a market for recording studio playsets? This was waaaay before Jem and the Holograms

Been eye balling that Green Slime on fleabay ever since I saw it in person.

I have this set! I found it in 1990 at a toy show. It's been well used. Part of the mike stand as come off as well as the radio mike holder, but I still play w/ it. In fact it was used in my doll blog when the girls went to the drive-in to see a sci-fi movie (I made up):

"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

I had this set as a kid, used to use it with Super Joe figures mostly, sold it to a friend here a few years back though. It was a fun play-set and made a good space station/control room.

My guess is they were trying to tie this into Buck Rogers. Maybe pretend Buck was a big rock star before he got frozen.

Actually, the recording studio would have gotten a lot of use. Where else could 12" Shaun Cassidy, Sonny, Cher, The Captain, Tennille, Donny, Marie and Debby Boone go to bust out some jams? And don't forget KISS!

Laverne & Shirley, Lenny & The Squigtones, and "Wonder Woman" (Lynda Carter) also put out albums in the 70s. So did Cheryl Ladd, but she's in the wrong scale. LOL!

I never knew this toy existed until now, but now I know that I really, really want one. Too cool.

That looks awesome with Brick and the alien. All of that together would have been awesome to have.

I love the playset, but Cmdr. Brick's spacesuit is even more intriguing--shouldn't he have green-stained skin & weird eyes?

Well, they did make a 12" Cheryl Ladd doll (was that Mattel?) and my Michael Jackson doll knocked out some choruses of "Human Nature" in this thing as well. (RIP Michael).

I love the fact that you used the Green Slime variant vinyl figure for your display

Thanks, HardyGirl! I kinda sorta thought there might have been a 12" Cheryl, but wasn't quite sure. I knew there was one of Jaclyn and of course, the Mego Farrah.
