    1977 Western Auto Toy Catalog

Christmas is that magical time when stores that don't normally carry toys start selling them in a big way. In my neck of the woods it was Canadian Tire but for many of you in the states Western Auto was the unlikely source of fun.

Known year round for Auto parts and fire arms, Western Auto stocked the hottest toys during the holiday shopping season.

1977 was a great year to believe in Santa, boys got bionic and stretchable heroes, even ones with guts you could see. Girls got Donny and Marie and Farrah hair for everyone!

I dare say my parents never bought one toy for me or my brother at a Western Auto.

oh man we had a western auto in town here, and they were so much higher that they had toys just sit and sit on the shelves ... so much so that last time I went in to the place before they had their closing up shop sale, would have been like (1994 ish) they still had the green care bear with the clover belly moc, go bots moc, GI joe figures from the 5th wave so 1986 figure, super naturals ... and I think he'man mossman ... of course I was only into star wars toys at that time and passed on them all ... still kick myself.

Wow! Cool stuff! Tippy Tumbles, Baby Thataway, Charlie's Angels, Evel Knievel and all those great toys! Never heard of Western Auto, but that's great they sold toys during the holidays.

You missed out Scott. Western Auto is the place Santa(Mom & Dad) got me a Batman Helicopter by EMPIRE for Christmas many years ago. Still got it too.

As someone who grew up in a small town without a toy store or even a Wal-Mart, Roses, etc., Western Auto was definitely the source for some toys in my childhood. I remember getting an AJ Foyt racing set for my birthday once, as well as odds and ends of trucks and such. They carried GI Joe (the RAH line), but I was never into those.

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

I got my second bicycle from Western Auto, and always looked forward to their Christmas offerings.

Russ, our Western Auto also had lots of leftover 80s toys in the mid-90s when it closed, and I picked up a few He-Man items that I flipped/traded for credit at my comic shop I frequented at the time.

I just noticed, that's my Big Wheel right there. Same colors, stickers, everything!

WOW!! This ad sure brings back great memories. I can't believe how many things in this ad that I got that year. This was my 6th Christmas, but the first one I really remember vividly.

The things in this ad that I had:

                Putt-Putt Railroad
                See 'n' Say
Viewmaster Set (in the canister with the Disney reels)
                Mickey Clubhouse (Weebles)
Six Million Dollar Man (with Bionic Grip)
                Bionic Woman (with Mission Purse)
                Para-Medic Emergency kit
                Jaws game
                Putt-Putt Motor Speedway

I also had the Green Machine, but I got that for my birthday the following April. It was stolen off my front porch only a few weeks later!

I never liked the Putt-Putt Railroad and Speedway. The only time they ever got played with was when a friend wanted to set them up.

Of course, Steve and Jaime were the #1 top favorites that year.

We still have our Western Auto.
                  Sort of.
They took the name off the front of the building a few years ago.
But it's still that same place, same owners, same empoyees.
Even the same nasty guy that used to chase us "no good kids" out of the store back in the 70's.
It's the only hardware store in town. And even though their prices are still really high on some stuff, the older retirees in town still do their shopping there every week or so.

Pulsar was pretty reasonably priced compared to Fonzie, considering the parts in Pulsar.
