Colouring Book Theatre: Star Trek Rescue at Raylo

It's been two months since we've had a colouring book to review but this week a kind soul dropped a real doozy into my lap.
Star Trek Rescue at Raylo" is easily one of the dumbest experiences I've had a long while.
Despite the Motion Picture cover, the contents are nothing but reprinted materials from the mid seventies boom of original series merchandise.
Merrigold press wasn't the only company to pull this sort of "bait and switch" Peter Pan re released their book and record sets with TMP covers as well.
Getting back to the book, either they left some pages out during reprint or it was simply put out by adults who didn't give care about anything at all.

Ah "Le Shat" in his late 60s glory

There are a lot of easy jokes to be had what with Mr. Spock, the device and the fact that he's entering a cave. I've put all the ingredients out, you make your own.

Tiny spaceships zoom out of the cave and head for Captain Kirk, who is busy with his space corn.

    Poof! Poof!
Kirk is knocked out and Spock summons Dr. McCoy, who is drawn to look upset through out the entire thing.

Kirk feigns amnesia, then begins reciting random numbers and then procedes to walk like Glenn Strange's Frankenstein to a cave.

Kirk and crew find frozen space explorers, frozen by Dr. Rychlo. Oh and that someone's coming? It's never addressed again.

The happy people help revive Dr. McCoy, why does Doctor McCoy need reviving? WHO KNOWS? Apparantly though in between pages 21 and 22, he was knocked out by something.

The rest of the book is simple little puzzles and jumbles we've all spent enough time with. Obviously that stuff was way more important than anything resembling a coherant story line. Then again this book retailed for $0.59, how much care and energy does one expect for that?

I think I had the pre TMP release version of this book and that they did cut out pages for this version.

Now I know what Spock felt like when they removed his brain...

I have an earlier version of this coloring book, from 1978 apparently, but it may have been published earlier. The copyright info on the cover says 1966, 1978, but the indicia inside just says 78. At 49 cents, it's cheaper than the TMP cover version, and has the missing pages to explain what the heck is going on! I'm betting I picked this up in the early 80s at Howard's, because I didn't know Star Trek from Wagon Train in the 70s (despite my Mego Spock figure and Phaser Battle game). Howard's was notorious for keeping old stock on the shelves for years and years. Had they not left town in 1986, I'm sure a Secret Wars Kang would still be hanging on the pegs.

Oddly enough, this book was published by Whitman. Maybe they were all part of the same company.

Anyway here is the cover. I like the painting, but it's odd that they put a pic of the Shat there.

When Spock says "Shh! Someone's coming!" the next page shows those little dudes doing what aliens are supposed to. It's in their union by-laws.

And now we see how Bones got knocked out. The baddie threw/spew dust at them. Thrilling, huh? Spock revived earlier than Bones due to his Vulcan physique no doubt. That was the usual excuse right?

I hope this helps you sleep at night Brian, knowing how this engaging plot fully played out.

Since coloring book captions are usually at the bottom of the page, I didn't immediately notice the line of dialogue mid-page. This can be read an ENTIRELY different way given the probe-like appearance of the alien's weapons.

Ah, that explains why the artwork is the same as the Star Trek coloring book I submitted. Part of the same series. I love the fact that back then coloring books weren't just random, they had a series and a style.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

Glad to be of help pal. Maybe Dr. Rychlo put the dust whammy on you!

Ha! I hadn't even thought of that. Maybe that's the reason Bones looks even more stressed and honked off than usual in this book.

Oh, one more thing about that painted cover that bugs me. Spocks head protrudes from the frame design, but the rest of his body doesn't. That's just odd.
