What toys from your childhood are you NOT nostalgic for?

Toy Reviewer Michael Crawford mentioned in a post here that he's bought boxed versions of his 9 yr old kids' favorite toys to give them on their 30th birthday, and it got me thinking:

If your parents or someone did that for you, what could you unwrap today that you'd be completely indifferent to?

My Mom actually got me the updated Millenium Falcon in 1999, and while I was psyched that she got me both something I didn't ask for and a toy to boot, it's not something that hit my sweet spot at all. Though I had several Star Wars figs as a kid and a lone white Tie Fighter, as an adult collector I barely do Star Wars at all, vintage or modern (the one exception being Tie Fighters - I really dig 'em) and I eventually gave it to my cousin's 6 year old for Christmas last year, having never opened it.

Likewise, I'm not into 12" GI Joe, though I played with them at friends' houses and would probably buy the yellow Adventure Team vehicles if I could get them cheap enough. Same with the Super Joes, though I'd use the suits for Mego customs.

I hate the 6 Million Dollar Man toys (they're not Mego!), though I watched the show religiously and my best friend had one and we played a lot with it.

As a kid, I always wanted but never got any slot cars, and if I got them now, I'd be pretty bored with them. Not my thing at all.

Of course, Michael also runs the risk that his kids will not like or appreciate any toys at all as adults. There are plenty of grown-ups who feel nothing for toys, even the ones they once had.

If a kid got Mego Waltons for Christmas, how excited would he have been?

I could do without the many tea sets I received.

I didn't want to play tea party back then and I don't want to play tea party today.

I've thought about this and I honestly can't think of anything. All the toys that were bought for me back then I loved and I would love to unwrap them now if somebody put them away for me. I can appreciate all things as a collector, apart from Barbie and baby dolls .

I have a feeling that Mr. Crawford's kids will have a vastly different relationship with their toys than does the average american kid. And many of the MM 'next generation' will most likely be the same. I believe what Crawford said he was socking away were some of his kids FAVORITE toys. If I were to do the same thing, I would certainly pick out the things that get played with so much they are ragged around the edges and/or have been repaired in order to come back into action. I don't think I would pick the oodles of McDonaldland disposable toys that litter the bottom of the toybin.

I think it could go either way; they could rebel in their teenage years and hate something their dad loves so much, and never return to it. Even without the teenage rebellion, they could just feel no nostalgia for their favorite toys once they put them down and move on to the opposite (or same) sex, college, booze, and other trappings of adulthood. I can think of a lot of toys I played with as a kid that I have no interest in now, even beyond what I mentioned above. I think most non-collectors don't feel nostalgia the way that we do. Having what I have and seeking it out genuinely pleases me - I think there's a personality type that simply wouldn't feel that at all, even holding their once favorite toy in their hands.

I guess I'm an oddball, as I'm nostolgic for all my old childhood toys...including the stuff I always wanted and never had. Heck, I even get a bit misty when I see an old toy my Sister had. I need counselling!!

                        Hmmmm....

Lots of stuff I don't miss: Phantom 4, U-Fly-It aircraft, numerous cars and the like. I find there's a sort of in-between class of toy for me too; stuff I don't miss in it's original form, but really like the idea and will one day customize in 8" Mego scale. Dragonriders of the Styx, Pulsar, UFO Commander 7.... (Sometimes I pick old ones up to use as models, kike I did with the robot candy toy.)

                          Johnny West.

I had a ton of this stuff when I was a kid. I have tried at least a half dozen times in the last 15+ years to collect them and I always end up getting rid of them. As an adult collector I just find them clunky and boring. I guess I'm a little "nostalgic" about them but I just can't collect them at all.....

Tinkertoys. I got one of the sets as a kid, and was bored stupid with it.

I was mostly into Raggedy Ann, Mego, and the occasional Barbie.

One thing I don't miss are the original click-clacks; the ones made out of solid glass.

One wrong move and you either ended up with a black eye or a missing tooth! My mom flat out refused to buy one for me.

Is the game Concentration still hot? I used to LOVE that game, even if I couldn't beat it!

One that I loved as a kid was Shaker-Maker. For those unfamiliar with the concept - you got this plaster stuff that you mixed with water and shake it in its special shaker cup with a head mold of a character (such as Batman). The heads would be slimy but eventually dry and shrink onto their bodied bases. Then you painted them. (Perhaps this was one of the earliest forms of customizing figures).

Lite Brite - What a waste of time this one was. I could never make anything that was pictured... they never seemed to give you enough of those pegs to make anything.

So please nobody send me the above mentioned as gifts!
