    Go Exploring with BIG RED!

Big Red is one of those wonderful toylines that was created specifically for a catalog, in this case the Speigel catalog. A mix of Big Jim and GI Joe, I've had many folks tell me about having Big Red as a kid but honestly, I've never seen one as a collector.

He kind of looks like Dr. Benton Quest. For more Fashion Mockery and 70's toy love visit us at Plaid Stallions.com

Looks like he's got very poor articulation.

I do like the safari suit and flannel coat

That 3 wheeler reminds me of AJ's Scramble Cycle.

Looks like he's articulated at the knees, ankles, wrists (??), hips, elbows, shoulders and head. I wouldn't necessarily call that very poor articulation, at least by 1970's standards.
I am more than machine. More than man. More than a fusion of the two.

At first glance I thought it didn't have wrist articulation leading me to think it was a blow molded figure

Looks like they ran with him for three years and counting. Weird that there is so little info about him.

Some of the shots look like's Fighting Yank based (so maybe Mego created him?) and other places I see Mr Action/BARTER toys.

I don't know why he seems kind of familiar because I certainly never had one and being in Canada, I never saw a Spiegel catalog.

That's what i was thinking, some of the figures look very much to be on a Fighting Yank body (the hands are distinctive) but others look more like a Mr. Action body. Most of the shots show him with very stiff arms, except that last photo with the one holding a rifle. Maybe they were bendy arms?

I love the reel to reel tape deck graphic in his discovery camper

I have both of those jeeps as adult purchases, actually had the red one as a kid from a trip to the flea market with gramps.

On closer inspection, I think I have some pieces from the Camping Set. I got them in a huge lot of 70s toys at an antique mall once. The sacks of flower and the barrel are definitely the same.

Wow... I have NEVER seen this figure line. To me, it looks like a mix between Fighting Yank (in construct) mixed with Big Jim accessories and styling. Like the Big Josh beard on the Yank.
