    Don Newton

Today the Aquaman Shrine (my favorite site next to the Museum) celebrates a Don Newton sketch of the Sea King.

I'm a great fan of Newton, particularly his DC work on the Batman and Marvel families in the early '80s. I can't quite describe his appeal to me--Alex Raymond meets film noir? Beautiful, expressive figures, great anatomy and use of blacks (ink). Reminiscent of Gene Colan in some ways , but more refined lines.

I need to read his Phantom, and somehow I've missed his work on Aquaman. I wish he'd had a chance to work longer.

    Any other fans here?

I miss the solid work of guys like Newton. Other great runs of his: Batman and Detective, Star Hunters, and his one shot at The Avengers (an annual, I believe) hinted at what a great turn he could have had at Marvel, too.

LOVED Don Newton's work. He came into Batman just as I did. His obituary in Dick Giordano's "Meanwhile" column hit me like a ton of bricks at age 9 or so.

His work on Batman and Detective, for me as well. He had this specific way of drawing Batgirl that has always been my favorite of his, with the Comorant ('Batgirl was shot') storyline (that was later picked up in her 'Special').

Chris, I'm so with you on the obituary. He was one of the first artists, long with Perez and a few others, that I learned to recognize and appreciate. I was about 15 when I heard of his passing and recall feeling so upset.

He drew both men and women so attractively, I remember his Nocturna. And he really "humanized" Capt. Marvel in an almost "Mac Raboy" way.

At first I didn't like his Batman, but it grew on me really fast. He did a lot of fine work in Detective. I liked what he did with Aquaman and Captain Marvel, but by the time he left Detective, he was my favorite regular Bat artist working on the character at the time. He left to take over Infinity Inc. from Ordway, but his death allowed the book to fall to McFarlane. Really would have liked to have seen what Newton would have done with II.
