Star Trek T1 Kirk w/ metallic green hair Variant?

Greetings. I found this odd Type 1 Captain Kirk in a recent Mego lot purchase. The figures hair is painted with a brown paint that has a distinct metallic green shine. I've owned a bunch of Kirk figures over the years and have never seen this variant before. I've also never seen anyone else ever make note of it. Is this more common then I believe or is it a special find?

    I have one; it's wearing a custom green captain's wrap-shirt.

They're not "rare" but they aren't common either. Little bit harder to find than a common Kirk. If a complete Kirk would sell for $35...this would probably get ya about an extra $10 on top.

am wondering if any of the other crew members sport this metallic paint? and is this a type 1 only feature?

I've seen numerous examples of this with Galen/Cornelius as well.

I have a kirk too - really cool variation!

I think I have a Zira besides Cornelius.

At one time I had a Starsky from Starsky and Hutch.

I don't know why but I think it is some sort of oxidation that causes this

It's been discussed before and I believe Joe is correct. It's not the paint color, or in the paint, but instead it's an oxidation on the surface of the paint.

It can be removed (rather easily) with certain vinyl cleaners and conditioners.

Looks good on the Chimps and I have an Astronaut and a Tong that has wicked sofubi-like hair too.

The cause maybe one of the great Mego chemical mysteries!

Whatever is the cause, it's not something that happened over time. I clearly remember a friend of mine getting a Corny for Christmas around 1975 and he had the green metallic shine to his hair back then, I thought it looked cool.

Rubbing all that green makeup all over his toupee Len is a good theory - Mego did a good job in replicating the effect.

It is oxidation. get a wet rag and it should clean it off.

i wiped the figure down with a soft cloth and a little novus plastic cleaner - and i'm glad to say it had no effect on the green shine. it doesn't come off that easily.

It's not oxidation...it's the way they were painted. There is also a Galen from the POTA line and the boots from the Flash Gordon 9 inch line also have the metalic paint.

^^ Then how do you explain that it *wipes* off in addition to exhibiting common traits of oxides? There is some chemical reaction causing the pigmentation (ie: material produced).

Maybe a metallic particle in the paint, or deposited on the heads, that has a reaction to oxygen under certain conditions resulting in the metallic sheen on the surface?

                              Any chemists in the house?
