So Goosebumps was playing at our local theater, and it was my son's birthday. He and my daughter wanted to go, so Cindy and I went along. I'm a little too old to have been into the books, but I was aware of them when they first hit big. The kids however have read them, and watched reruns of the 90s TV series The Hub used to air. And, Cindy is a children's librarian, so we went.
I liked it! It's not going to change the way you look at horror films or anything, but it had some genuinely nice monster moments, good effects, and an engaging story. Jack Black was actually pretty good in his most non-annoying phase.
Overall, it reminded me a bit of a sanitized Monster Squad. There has been much discussion how that movie would NEVER get made nowadays...well, this is how it WOULD get made.
If you have kids and are on the fence, I'd recommend it. It's probably starting to show up at the cheap-o theaters at this point.
