Glow in the dark and Translucent: Best classic toy gimmicks ever!

I don't think glow in the dark toys and translucent toys get enough classic toy love. Me, I love that stuff. Some of my favs.

Aurora Monster models were great that goes without saying. But when they added glow parts it just took them to another level awesomeness.

Mego Mad Monsters: Classic Mego figures made even better because they glowed in the dark. Sure the AHI figures were licensed, but they didn't glow in the dark. Mad Monsters the clear winner.

Now, Remco fixed that with their Mini Monsters and 9 inch Monsters. Because again, Universal Monsters plus glow equals pure awesomeness. The first series mini Monsters aren't nearly as cool as second series glow ones. Not even close. The Creature's entire body glowed in the dark. Beyond cool.

Masters of the Universe Scareglow wouldn't be nearly as cool if he didn't glow in the dark. Again, great figure made even better because he glowed in the dark. Having that evil little dude glowing at kids at night, scarring the crap out of them, pure genius by Mattel.

Glow plastic just makes toys better. It's a fact. Heck, I would even collect Mego Happy Days figures if they glowed in the dark. Sure Potsie sucks. But a glow Potsie, not nearly as much.

Then there are translucent toys.

Tron, what can be said, they were translucent and they glowed in the dark. I mean come on! It just doesn't get much cooler. Tomy could have made them translucent and that really would have been enough for them to be kick butt figures. But they went that extra mile and gave them glow in the dark weapons. Because that's just how toy companies rolled back then. Pure awesomeness.

Crystar by Remco. Wicked cool looking figures. Didn't even have the comic as a kid but knew right away when I first saw them they reaked of translucenty goodness.

Pocket Superheroes Trading Card

Image: http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/pshtradingcard.jpg
Card number 28 is dedicated to one of my personal favourite toy lines of my child hood, Mego's Pocket Superheroes. Released in the late 1970s, these 3 3/4" figures kept my love of Superheroes alive in a time when everything around was space orientated.

For more on this killer line, check out the Mego Museum Pocket Superheroes Gallery (http://www.megomuseum.com/heroes/pocket/figures.html).

I'll be giving out these cards at tomorrow's Toronto Toy Show if you're in the area (click here for $2 off coupon to get in (http://www.antiquetoys.ca/coupons.html))

Mattel Clash of the Titans Catalog

Image: http://www.plaidstallions.com/mattel/clashheader.jpg (http://www.plaidstallions.com/mattel/clash.html)

Mattel hoped that they ahd the next Star Wars with Ray Harryhausen's second trip into Greek Mythology in 1981's "Clash of the Titans" . While the film was a hit at the box office, it somehow didn't carry over to the toy shelves. Mattel released only one wave of figures and cancelled other merchandise based on the film.

The 1981 Catalog highlights what was released and gives us a little taste of what was in store had the toy line taken off:

Was wondering if any of the Joe headz around here could help me out. I picked this Joe up today at an estate sale ($30!)--pretty nice shape with box. My question is this---the hat is "made in USA" but fits REAL loose on his head--won't stay on. Was wondering if this hat originally came with this doll. Also, are all vintage Joe dog tags the same? I may look for a dog tag for him on eBay and was wondering if there is a certain variation I need to look for to go along with this particular doll. Advice?

Wondering if someone here might know the answer to this, were any of the Marx 1967 Marvel Statues (See Spidey beow) ever released factory painted?

Image: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/Sowth/P5080017.jpg

I thought not, but I recently saw a couple of painted examples of Hulk and DareDevil here in Oz that were identical to the painted examples shown in the Marvel Silver Age collectibles mook. They say that there were not factory painted examples issued, but this article says there were (http://www.toycollector.com/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=Louis-Marx-Co---An-Overview.html&Itemid=157).

The examples I saw were so perfect and identical in colour, tones etc to the examples photographed it was just too much of a co-inkidink. Perhaps some of the larger toy stores were issued a painted display set to show what the finished result could be?

It's a Mystery Charlie Brown.

Everybody seems to forget about these little guys that predate "starting Line Ups" by a decade or so. These figures are close to Mego (http://www.megomuseum.com/) size and eventhough I'm not a big sports guy, I will cop to finding these pretty neat.
If anyone has an extra Green Bay Packer, I have a good friend who would probably love it.
