View Full Version : All That Needs to Be Said About That Heroes for Hire Cover
Marvel’s cover art for Heroes for Hire #13 (due in stores August 29) upset a lot of people because of the various things it implies: bondage, subjugation, sexual threat (check out the dripping goo on the tentacle), female heroes treated as passive… in short, business as usual for Marvel, only more obviously so. I don’t [...]

I don't think it's that Bad.. Sure it's "Suggestive" But no more than Pam Anderson on Baywatch was... I dunno, this world is too Vaginized & The Media is just way to outta control. If you don't like something, turn it off or don't buy.

Some might say the world is too penisized. :oh:
I dunno, I can see the author's points. Certainly on the "whitening" of the black girl, etc., and staying true to what the characters are supposed to be. I know absolutely nothing about hentai, so can't comment on that aspect of the controversy.

Blacknight has a good point. If you don't like it, don't support it.

That's pretty blatant tentacle porn and I think Marvel knows it, I think the most shocking thing is the denial. It's not new that comics cater to the most common denominator though. I'd have mostly walked right by it in a comic store and not even noticed.

It's obvious you're not familiar with REAL tentacle porn. *shudder*
>The sexual threat comes from a set of associations in an adult mind.
In this case I wholeheartedly agree.
>Starfire, Wonder Woman et al have been wandering around with OTT cleavages for years with minimal comment.
Not just that; but Wonder Woman has been tied up like that on comic covers for decades!
>and staying true to what the characters are supposed to be.
That one's trickier; but haven't we seen covers with Superman, or Batman, or Aquaman expressing fear and such? Showing an unflappable character at a moment of vulnerability on the cover has been a selling point for comics forever. As for the clevage; does ANYONE remember the 90's? Compared to a lot of "Glory" or "Fatale" covers this one is pretty tame.
I can't help but wonder if the Japanese comic-esque designs are part of the outrage. That folks automaticly connect manga eyes and tentacles with sexual deviancy. Or maybe folks would be more forgiving if the designs were more western.

I wish that were the case but sadly no, I sometimes just have to see what people are talking about. It raises a good point though, the cover itself is not so much porn as the tentacles dripping fluid onto the large breasted manga styled bodies somehow promise tentacle porn.
Of course, this is a bait and switch and I'm sure the inner content will be misleading to anyone who is hopeful of that outcome.

I'm one who would love it if marvel and DC would clean themselves up a bit making them more family friendly universes - I want my kid to be able to read comics... Having said that, I don't think this cover is worth the outrage.
The EC covers that ushered in the comics code were much worse

Like I said, I'd have never noticed it. I'm more outraged at Marvel Zombies, it gets advertised everywhere and I can't even bring my son to comic shops anymore. Sorry if I don't want my son seeing Spiderman as a monster eating Mary Jane.
