Skeleton Warriors an unloved toy line lost in time.

I seem to always fall in love with lines that no one else seems to like.

Skeleton Warriors was one of those lines that had everything going for it. Based on the Skeleton Warriors animated series developed by Gary Goddard's Landmark Entertainment. Gary Goddard was the director of 1987 live action Masters of the Universe movie and probably not coincidently Skeleton Warriors does have some similarities to MOTU.

A cartoon and toy line that's like a spookier version of Masters of the Universe with a touch of Harryhausen-ish skeletons? I was like, shut up and take my money! Playmates really outdid themselves on the figures and went with a style, scale, articulation and level of detail way out of their usual TMNT comfort zone. The figures had sculpts and paint way beyond anything else at the time and the figures hold up to this day.

I think a couple of things played into the failure of the toy line. Kids were still going crazy for Power Rangers and Playmates launched the line with the skeleton villains first. The heroes weren't released until months later. By the time the three heroes were released, the line was already on discount. So much awesome stuff was planned for the line that never saw the light of day. An awesome giant bone dragon, a castle playset and second series of figures which would have included a Viking and Samurai looking skeletons and the missing heroine Princess Talyn. Note to toy companies: please release the female heroes in the first assortment in case the line doesn't make it to series 2.

Playmates released eight figures. Prince Lightstar, Grimskull, Ursak the Guardian, Baron Dark, Shriek, Dr. Cyborn, Dagger and Aracula. Plus a Skeleton Legion Skullcycle vehicle (it's kinda like a Speederbike made out of bones) and a Skeleton Legion Warhorse. An awesome but small set of toys that was and is beastly unpopular. But on the bright side, they are very inexpensive toyline to collect that is getting close to twenty years in age.

There's actually three major variants on the set of figures. The original numbered editions which have the "NEW! Collectible individually numbered figures!" starburst on the cards. The un-numbered edition which replaces the numbered starburst with a small parts warning. The un-numbered figures are missing several paint aps and the vac-metal parts of numbered ones. Lastly the 2002 Re-Play figures which come on different bubbles and have even less paint aps than the un-numbered figures. Seriously, they went with the absolute bare minimum paint they could get away with on these. Needless to say, they are vastly inferior to the original numbered figures.

    I love the Skeleton Warriors!

I only have the multi-armed one, but always wanted more (especially the lady).
Very nice and imaginative evil toy line!

I remember seeing these in Tomart's and Lee's at the time. I seem to recall the coverage indicating that these would be big with collectors, maybe due to the numbering?

I recall thinking these were pretty neat, but was too absorbed with BTAS at the time to bother with nearly anything else. They do look nice though.

I remember the cartoon (which came on when I was in college) and remember thinking when I heard about it that it sounded like a revisit to Eternia. I never saw the toys, but the pictures here do hold up well. Good to know about them!

These are great toys, they have a comic book line , trading cards and a board game too to top it all off. Do you have the war horse and skull glider too?

I remember that. Both magazines were heaping praise on the line at its Toy Fair debut. Skeleton Warriors seemed posed to be the next big fantasy adventure line joining the ranks of MOTU and Thundercats.

                Yep, I'll add pics tonight.

I really loved these toys when they first came out... I mean c'mon! Undead Skeleton Pirates. How much awesome is that? The quality of the sculpts and paint apps were amazing too. The bad guys were really the stars of this line.

I'm sure the couple of Skeleton figures I bought back in the day will eventually make it onto my table at an upcoming toyshow, which will undoubtably result in some good natured ribbing from palitoy and cjefferys.

No, those are pretty cool actually. I've seen items on your table far more questionable than those.

                      Hmmmm....

They're fantastic figures, and a neat, creepy idea for a series. I'd always felt that what killed them was timing: they came out at the beginning of action figure collector madness and kinda straddle the line between collectible and toy. Not quite detailed enough for the collectors of the day, not quite playable enough for really good toys.

Wait... are we talking about the big pile of Swanks, the Disney Princess Collection, or the crack? Unless Canadian media is lying to me, at least TWO of those are now socially acceptable north of the border, and the Swanks aren't mine. 8)

                          Hands off my Swanks.

I remember Lee's guide really trumpeting this line, it was nicer than the average Playmates offering. It just sort of came and went.

Well one of those is apparently socially acceptable but only if you are a mayor. Disney Princesses are socially acceptable but NOT if they are owned by a guy in his forties. A devilish part of me would love to bring a box full of porn mags to the next show just to see the reaction. I'd either make a bunch of money or get ejected from the show.

                              Skeleton Legion Skullcycle

It has a cruise and attack mode. The wings and front spoiler extend and you open the skull jaw to launch a hidden blade missile.

                              Skeleton Legion Warhorse

It has great sculpt and paint details but, surprisingly, no articulation. It does have a rotating battle ax on the side and a blade missile launches out of the skull shaped chest armor.
