It is hard to believe it has been 5 years since we started down the road of the 1978 re-imagined project, but it has.
It is now 2013 and I would like to propose a new project in the tradition of "1978" focusing on 1983 and imagining what might have been if Mego did not shutter it's doors.
This thread is simply to gauge interest and see if it is a viable idea. I am not necessarily looking for suggestions or submissions, but for interested participants whether it be customizers, designers, photographers, etc.
You can count me in as an interested customizer. Anybody else?

Hey Austin...count me in. I'll offer submissions, photoshopping or however else I can help.

This would be one of those years when I was actively collecting as a kid. Great properties from both tv and movies. Nice fantasy material to.
Would be cool, I think.

1983 is such a good year for it. After the dregs of Mego 1982 the company rebounds with a huge catalog of new stuff instead of going bankrupt and vanishing.
It's a lot of work, but an intriguing idea!

I would love to see it....Already thinking a few ideas up-Definitely interested.
1978 was great fun. Would love to see what the local squish heads would come up with for an 83 rebound.
Doubt i could be of help, but i would love to see it.

Que up the A-Team, Knight Rider, and Magnum PI TV themes. There's a hint of what could've been.

Bump this!
I think this is a terrific idea. We've got a lot of talented costumizers on this board, probably more than ever, that could do some fantastic work. I know of the work involved with photography and logistics, but this would be awesome to pull off. Anthony did the best design work of his life on the 1978, and I can only imagine he would top what he put down last time.
A-Team
Miami Vice
Magnum
Cosby Show
Return of the Jedi
The Fall Guy
Simona and Simon
A couple of those might be from 84, can't remember. With everything that routinely happen on this board with our trolls and sociopaths popping in, a project like this could bring the community together again in a unique way. Just a thought.

I have an idea for something I'd do if this materializes.
And just a plug I'll have some of the '79 ReImagine catalogs at Mego Meet if someone is looking for one.

just kidding.. it sounds like fun. I LOVE the '78 catalog. The only down side is I still look longingly at my collection wishing there really were the Star Wars figures.

I can sew some suits if needed.
Maybe it could be a Megos in the 80's catalog to include a wider range of shows/characters?

Couldn't something like GI Joe RAH figures be in the '83 Re-Imagine?? Isn't that the year they came out in 3 3/4?

I think you've hit on the best idea yet for this.

Look at 1983 in the toybiz... you've got GI Joe RAH hitting it, He-Man, and Transformers.
I'm thinking 1983 would be the year of the Mego Micronauts second coming... the link between RAH and Transformers.
Possibly Mego going after the Rambo line or one of the many P.O.W. military films, like Missing in Action, in order to get a military foothold in the GI Joe market.
Remco has Conan and Warlord, Mattel has He-Man... what does Mego come up with to compete?
Wrestling was big with Remco having the rights to AWA and LJN having WWF. What does Mego do?

The A Team! Those would be some awesome Megos! I loved that show as a kid. They did make some larger molded figures for this, I even had a few, but Megos would have been much more preferable. Imagine the van. Oh man! The accessories!

Lord of the rings? Scooby Doo! The Mystery Machine! The innumerable villains! The play set possibilities. Imagine a haunted house play set . I gotta goo with some scooby doo. Even in reruns I think it would have been popular with kids, both boys and girls. Different outfits for Daphne and Velma.

Don't forget Cheers began in 82. Not the most action packed line, but they made 3-3/4" Love boat figures. I figure anything goes.

That video is awesome. the only thing that takes me out of it is GI Joe, and He-Man... since both cartoons came about from the toylines.
How does Mego get the rights to He-Man, when the Mattel owns it hook line and sinker? Same as GI Joe.
I need my fiction anchored in some science here. :)

The catalog is called 1983 IMAGINED. How about imagining Mattel was one that went out of business and not Mego?

Sean has tackled he-Man, beast man and skeletor if they're something you think fits.
I have the 18" vintage Kenner Alien figure - I could break it down, scan it, shrink it to Mego-scale maybe.

Mind... BLOWN. I wish to visit this alternate 1983, where Mego took a chance on Star Wars and became the dominant force in action figures. To the TARDIS!

Kind of surprised our little buddy Action Jackson wasn't featured. Thinking Mego would've re-introduced the line to compete with Hasbro's GI Joe A Real American Hero. Forgot about Tron. Could've seen Mego altering either the ST:TMP or Buck Rogers 3.75" molds for an action figure line.

Neat concept on the video but I don't think Mego would have put out a promotional video consisting of nothing but ideas and TV clips. Would be supercool to see that same video content replaced with custom figures and a voiceover announcer like the original mego presentations.

Cool video!
Great ideas too. Mego did plan Rocky figures, which PAC/ Phoenix ended up producing. This has been thrown around in the past, and I agree with the theory that LJNs Magnum PI figure was probably a Mego designed toy. I always felt Tri-Stars MASH line was a Mego salvage as well.
im positive they would have snatched up the ATeam as well. Most likely in 3 3/4".
WWF?-- why not? They did ( well PAC did) Hogans Thunderlips character from Rocky..... Wouldn't take much of a leap to expand the figure style into wrestlers.
Trek II---- that would have been FANTASTIC!!!

Just wanted to point out that G.I. Joe A Real American Hero may not exist in this alternate reality, because Mego made the Star Wars line in 8 inch form, they may not have decided to discontinue the Super Joe line. Perhaps kids would have stayed intrested in Super Joe because it would go well with their Mego Star Wars figures. Just a theory, though.

Especially since FTC and others started releasing so many figures that were going to be in this catalog. I like to think that this project was the inspiration for the Mego Renaissance we are experiencing now. :wink_y:
Peace, Love, and Megos!
Austin
Too Bad !!!! Even with FTC's stuff coming out the catalog would have been fun. I would love to see a new catalog representing MEGO's advancing lines every five years until it came back. About 8 catalogs, imagine all the characters that could have been come up with from our community. Figures we still don't have, whole teams of superheroes and TV shows. My mind blows at all the possibilities.
