Playmates acquires Trek movie toy license!

Star Trek Headed Back To Playmates | TrekMovie.com

DST retains rights to all the non-movie toys.

This should be fun. It'll be nice to see Trek toys in the major stores again. I wouldn't be surprised if the offerings will have a bullseye on them from scalpers and the like, just cuz of the buzz and throwback factor from the old Playmates days. It's a fine line for PM to walk.. how much is enough to make readily available to all, but not too much for what might be a disinterested mass market?

Maybe it'll even invigorate the eBay market for the older Playmates Trek stuff..

Ok, that may be reaching a bit...

I'm just hoping for 2 things.

    1) The new figures will be the same scale as the old ones.

    2) We finally get a decent original show (-ish) bridge.

Hopefully the figures will be a lot better than their original line up ...I really hated those...the playsets were good though.

I really liked the Playmates stuff at the time, and overall it's still nice, but man, I wish they could have worked the "clunkiness" out of those figures. Its like Playmates just couldn't make a non-cartoony line. It wasn't near their horrid Dick Tracy line, but the figures still felt way too...chunky? Its hard to describe. In the time of steroid abusing Total Justice and GI Joe:Extreme, they weren't bad, but now they just seem kind of odd.

The 9" stuff was nice, save for their monsterous hands.

I cannot imagine that scalpers would go for this. Dealers could barely get pennies on the dollar for the original Playmates figures last time I checked. Do they even sell on eBay?

Yeah, the 9" stuff was pretty cool, but they pretty much killed that line themselves with all the variants. How many Picards, Datas or Worfs in a different suit does one need?

Yeah, the 5 inch Playmates figures were cartoony but except for the fact they can't sit correctly I like 'em. This was the most comprehensive line of Trek figures ever. I also hope the scale of the new film figures matches the old Playmates releases.

That would be great. I collected the Playmates classic Trek stuff pretty heavily and always hoped they would release a bridge playset. I do remember seeing a prototype for a cool looking Mego-ish vinyl classic bridge in a toy magazine many years back.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

The ebay market is pretty flooded with 5" PM Trek; most of it you're lucky to get a starting bid of $2 on. The 9" and 12" figs do ok, cuz there's less of them out there, and PM did a very nice job on most of them.

There's bound to be *some* collector/scalper buzz when these hit, regardless of how the 5" figs from 15 yrs ago are doing. It's all about what's new and hot, right?

That's good, b/c they gotta be better than those McFarlane figures of Enterprise. Those things just looked scary and not kid friend at all. I just wish they'd come up w/ playsets for the larger figures. I have a whole bunch (thanks to Damien!)

Personally I would love to see Doc Mego take this on. God knows he has a start at it anyways, all he would need to make are new headsculpts! Doc? Hello?

I agree with DavidB. A playset resembling the original series Bridge would be
                              nice and cool.
