View Full Version : Mego Meet 2013 - Change of hotel discussion

We decided to table this subject until the dust settled from the vbulletin upgrade. Now that were through that, Id like to share where we are leaning for next year.

As Chris Johnson and others have mentioned, the Super 8 is becoming less and less attractive. Costs are rising, competition for the rooms is getting tougher, and the new owners have not been open to working with us on scheduling our rooms in a manner that helps with the noise complaints. The Super 8 has never been particularly family friendly, and this year I believe it was worse than ever. I personally witnessed construction workers shouting f-bombs at each other from one end of the hall to the other, and it seems every year including this one - one or two of us end up with a sketchy room. The lack of a pool denies us all the opportunity to show off our svelte toy collector bods.

Given the above, it seems like an upgrade is in order. I have spoken with the folks at the Hampton Inn and it looks and sounds impressive:

For the Mego Suite they have a large room with an adjacent meeting room, and it opens to the courtyard. The room includes a bed, fold-out couch, and a plasma TV, fridge, microwave, etc. The guest rooms are nicer and better-equipped than Super 8, and include access to the exercise room and swimming pool. The views seem a lot better than Super 8, and reviews on the breakfast are good. There are plenty of dining choices close by, which is something to consider now that neither Hosss or Undos are options. Its obvious this is a much more family-friendly facility, and getting more museum families into the mix is something wed like to accomplish. Im personally pumped about the ability to turn right or left! when exiting the parking lot, but there are a few cons that should be mentioned:

- There doesnt seem to be an incline anywhere that is conducive to the Mego races
- The rooms cost more likely in the $140s with our discount
- The Hampton Inn is a little farther away from Kruger St.
- Change

I would hate to see the Mego Races end. As Mr. Gaffney has suggested, we could perhaps convert to RC vehicles and race in the courtyard. The greater distance from Kruger St. isnt quite as convenient, but we were going to need to drive further for the Thursday and Saturday dinners anyway which makes it almost a wash. I think the two biggest concerns are the increased cost, and just the idea of leaving the familiar Super 8 behind.

We need to finalize things with the Hampton Inn folks soon if we are going to make the switch. Please share your thoughts in this thread ASAP. I hope that we can reach a consensus and move forward.

Thanks,
Steve

I think paying more for a nicer spot is much better than settling for the bare minimum.

The Mego Meet is supposed to bring some great memories and happy times. Seems after this last one, it brought upon very dissatisfied individuals.

There is plenty enough time to save up for the Mego Meet next year. Everyone is given plenty of time to prepare.

Sounds good to me! After one year at the Super 8, I went elsewhere the next two years. Having a swimming pool is a must when bringing kids.

Same here. One year at Super 8 was enough for me. I don't mind paying more for better accommodations.

I've always stayed in St. Clairesville, OH (15 minutes away), but would book a room at the Hampton if we move there.

A better hotel would be added incentive for me to make the trip. The reviews and pics of the Hampton Inn look real swell.

Other than me, Everyone pretty much drives back and forth between the toy museum and hotel anyways correct? If so the move won't really be too big a deal. If the breakfast, exercise room, pool and general quality means a higher cost per night, I'm cool with it.

Does the Hampton inn have a dog policy?

I know folks were a little reticent around the topic of holding Mego Meet 2014 across the border in Toronto, but having scouted out Buffalo this weekend during our Mego Meat Canada excursion, I think it's a good compromise without bothering with passports and customs for those traveling from the US. the super 8 there is much better and similar enough in cost... Plus waffle bar! the Toys R Us is just across the street. Plus awesome wings and beer at the buffalo brew pub on Saturday night. Alternatively, there is the Bates like motel adjacent to the cemetery which charges a very convenient hourly rate.

If we hold it at the Legion Hall where they usually have the Buffalo toy show, there is the added bonus of the skeevy bar just through the double doors, which you have to walk through anyways if you want to use the rest room facilities. I can't imagine anything more family friendly than sharing a stall with an elderly gentleman who is completely loaded at noon.

At one point I couldn't imagine moving from the Super 8 but it's price steadily increases every year as other things seem to decrease.

From what Chris and Steve have told me, the new manager isn't so "megomeet friendly" and let's face it, things have never been ideal there. The two positives were cheap and accessible.

Sean and I will follow wherever the Suite goes.
I like to kick my shoes off and have a few "beverages" while I sew LOL.
I would not want to drive to the suite..have some fun..get tired..drive to a new place and hit the bed.
If it costs a few more bucks..well, gonna just have to buckle down and save better.
It's only once a year.

As next year will likely be my first time attending, the new hotel looks pretty nice, and some stories I've heard about the Super 8 there don't make that place that enticing to me. A little bit extra money for a better atmosphere is good IMO.

Plus it's near Niagara Falls. Lots of stuff to do if you bring your family (especially on the Canadian side) and casinos if you'd rather blow your money gambling than on Megos. ;) And there could be a mass flea market excursion on Sunday morning! And yeah, if the Super 8 is too bland, there's always a nice haunted hotel not far away. :smiley1:

The Super 8 was the (pardon the cliche) straw that broke the camels back for me this year. I REALLY needed a good night's sleep on Friday and I firmly believe that being denied that due to all of the noise above me was what pushed me over the edge into how I felt on Saturday and why I had to miss most of the meet. I was not planning on staying at the Super 8 again, no matter what the circumstances.

I'm all for anything other then the Super 8...

I had the Marriott SpringHill Suites booked as an alternate this year:

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/pitwh-springhill-suites-wheeling/

...but since I had several folks in tow with us that were also staying at the 8, we decided to stay.

It's 3.5 miles (7 mins) away from the Museum and also offers breakfast, a pool, and an exercise room.

We will most likely stay here next year because I'm a Marriott Rewards Member (unless the Hampton Inn is cheaper)...but it's not that far away from the Hampton Inn (less then 1/2 mile).

I'll echo what others have said about it being once year. Also, with the Super 8 on the downswing, Hoss's and Undo's out the picture the experience in the immediate area will probably never be the same as it was before. So it's probably time to move down the road and start some new traditions. The fact that there's several dining options also make it attractive.

I have no preference. I can always go to the 8 if I want a cheap room.

I'm good with whatever but agree on all accounts. I went to use the treadmill this year and they had a bunch of mattresses stacked in there. When a Patel takes control, the quality goes down, i deal with this in my job. Oh well, their loss.

I agree on all accounts. The price has been increasing and what they can offer has been decreasing. It's definitely not family friendly. I never had an issue with the 8. The first years I had a decent room and the room adjacent to the Suite was always nice. I always booked a room with Johnny prior to taking the mini suite. I spend about 2 hours total in the room awake for the whole 3-4 days. If I'm not sleeping, I'm either not there or I'm getting ready to leave to go to another room or the Museum. I'm good with wherever we go. Not like that's gonna stop me from attending. Two years in a row I haven't even gotten the room on Sat night because of my early Sunday flight. I leave for the airport at 4am. Whatever works is fine with me.

The price increase isn't ideal for me as that's an extra $180 I have to find. I've never had an issue with the 8 (although this year I didn't get a frig in my rooom - turns out only some rooms have them). But I'm up for the swith considering what we get in return.

I guess the beauty of it is, you can still stay at the Super 8. I mean, nothing is stopping you from hanging at the Megosuite all night and crashing at a different hotel.

True. But if the boys come next year I hate to be driving back and forth between hotels. I know they would enjoy the pool and better breakfast. It just means a little more planning is all.

The amenities will offset the cost. You have to figure if you are 3 or 4 people just the cost of breakfast per day is $8 to $10 a person... and your getting pool and gym rights, and I think I saw a washer dryer on premisis as well. This year the Super 8 cost me $79.00 a day before taxes; up about $9-$11 from last year so figure a jump to $89 a night next year, throw in breakfast for 4 that's another $35 a day... now your at $120 before taxes with a lesser room and still no pool. I say see how low you can get them being it has been 8 years and counting for most of you, knowing they will be getting buiseness for another 4, 6, 8 years beyond maybe they will go lower on a special rate.

Can't beat a review like this

"This hotel is the definition of a excellent hotel. It has beautiful grounds, super friendly staff, a wonderful pool and fitness center. Breakfast was absolutely delicious. We stayed there for three days and met the owner, Bob, on the first day. He offered to make us to steaks on the grill, and every morning he saw us he asked if there was anything we needed or that he could do for us. He was interactive in the hotel's business. He would clean up the garden and plant flowers, and made sure his hotel was extremely up to par and clean."

I had all intentions of hitting the meet this year. Then one of my closest friends decided to get married and asked me to be his best man. With that said, i am telling everyone the entire month of June is booked. I really need to attend and put faces with all your names.
A few things i do know about hampton inn. This one is not advertised but they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you tell them at checkout for whatever real reason you had an unpleasant stay, they will refund you. Also i do believe they don't accept pets but it might also be an individual motel policy. Also the breakfast is awesome. For me that is a big plus. They have stuff you can make right there and a place to sit and eat,or you can bring it back to your room. And plenty of stuff for the kids. Also most offer either a complimentary USA today or a local paper, free of charge. I know this is big for several of you but Hampton is also very family friendly. I think they are very much worth the few extra bucks. And like people have said, you can still stay at another hotel if you want. I look forward to meet 2013 and maybe if i plan enough now, i will actually be able to attend.

Hampton Inn wins! Next year I am bringing the family so the move sounds good
to me! I was planning on only going to the Super 8 for the suite - now if that is
coming to the Hampton Inn, that makes life easier.

When can we book our rooms?

Is this the one at 51130 National Road? Oh heck yeah, that looks good guys. I can save a little extra each week for this. We were bound to outgrow the Super 8 anyway, so I suppose this is the perfect time to take off the training wheels and ride the Hampton Inn bog boy bike.

I'm in. One thing I noticed in the reviews is they mention an outdoor grill and firepit. If we could reserve the use of this grill, I propose we do Saturday night dinner there. We can easily feed everyone for under $10 a head with burgers, chicken, hotdog, vegetarian options, sides and dessert.

I actually stayed at the Hampton Inn this year, and it was the most sleep I've ever had at a Meet. I usually stay at Hamptons when I am on the road, if I can, because I like the accomodations and the breakfast options. The gyms are solid and the pools are clean. Also there is a back road behind the hotel (under construction this year, so it should be finished by next year that would work well for the Mego Races.

So, yeah, I'm in for the Hampton. I was going to book there next year anyway :)
