Alien or Aliens ? -- which was the best ?
I think we all can agree to leave 3 and 4 out of the contest
Alien or Aliens ?
Tough call .......
Alien was scary as hell, but Aliens was just so much fun....
I'd have to pick Aliens as my fav movie of the series.
What about you ?

Boy good question Mike. I loved them both. They first one was very suspenseful. I think the ex-military man in me liked Aliens better though. Gotta love that hispanic chick Vasques, she was hot AND tough.

I'd have to say Aliens! As much as I love Ridley Scott...Alien is just to slow. James Camron really cranked it up, into a full blown action Flic!

Aliens also had that Power Loader finale.
It's probably one of the best finales of any Sci Fi movie ...
And yes -- Vasquez was a babe-- for sure !!!

Alien was more of a Sci-Fi movie and Aliens was more of a Action movie set in space. I really have never compared the two because of these two differences. Aliens 3 was actually pretty good, I never saw 4.

4 wasn't bad-bad......
But it's not a movie I care to see very often.
Winona Ryder did act pretty good as the robot...
But it really didn't have any characters a person cared for.
If a movie's audience don't care if the cast lives or dies, the movie is doomed from the start.

I think I have to go with Aliens as well  Bad ace movie

It would have to be Aliens because it showed the consequences of the first movie.
Yes Alien is a little bit slow but that adds to the jump 'n shock moments.
Alien feels more isolation based but I like the humour and charactor interaction in Aliens.
Alien 9 1/2 out of 10
Aliens 10 out of 10
And still they kept on making them until the idea of
an Alien movie is ruined and then they decided to ruin
yet another movie franchise Predator...Why ???

Aliens, especially after they added the new opening to it. Filled in a nice big missing gap.
Hmmmm....
Gotta go with Alien. Even today it's DIFFERENT from most flicks. Aliens wasn't a bad film; but it became the template for almost every action/sci-fi film that followed. So watching it now feels really old hat, 'cos I've seen a zillion clones over the years.

They are so totally different that it's hard to compare, but I think AlienS is the one I enjoy most. Bill Paxton helps make that movie for me.
I actually like the 3rd one quite a bit, took some time though, it had to grown on me.

The first Alien film can't be beat for feel and atmosphere. It's spooky without much actually happening at times. It's tough as a filmmaker to create this sort of tension. First film all the way.....
On a toy related note, I actually had the Kenner Alien given to me for Christmas back in '79 or so. What a frightful toy!

Alien definately, the film was just such a visual treat...Scott certainly drew on his set designer background for the movie. The sets looked functional and the alien itself has never been bettered than in that first movie. The fact that it showed a "man in rubber suit" monster could be believable and filmed on a level of maturity opened the door for films such as "Predator" and its ilk.
"Aliens" was a great film but detracted from the utter ferocity and devestation that 1 alien could bring about....for this reason I actually prefer "Alien 3" to Aliens.

The 1st Alien: more of a classic SiFi-Horror Movie.
2nd:SiFi Hardcore Action & War Movie(My Favorite Characters...Hicks & Ripley).

I'll second that Alien was more of a horror sci-fi movie. I love the suspense. You just gotta love how "original", "fresh" it seems. At least it does to me...
Aliens is more of an action movie. I watch it just for Hudson (Bill Paxton). "We're gonna die, man! We're all gonna die, man!" Somebody slap that marine!! And Vasquez. Definitely Vasquez, definitely Vasquez. There was somebody else in that movie, too - Paul Reiser - can't seem to remember - Paul Reiser - or remember his name - Paul Reiser.
I'll watch Terminator, then Aliens, then The Abyss, then Tombstone and then The Rock just to watch Michael Biehn melt down on screen. It's awesome!

Although Alien was a superb atmospheric movie, I'll always plump for Aliens. I loved everything about that movie, talk about keeping you pumped! It also has Ripley in the Exo-skeleton at the end which is super cool.

Wow,that is a difficult decision for sure as both movies are so vastly different.
Alien is all about surroundings and background almost Hitchcockian in appearance if you will.
Aliens is balls out action Sci-fi.
I think for scare factor I'd say Alien cause it makes you sike out yourself.
For fast paced action and enjoyment, Aliens.
Aliens just by a hair...

Any movie with Bill "Chet" Paxton gets my vote. Loved his whiney marine. Alien 4 is a close second for me. Ron Perlman, nuff said.

^^^ Yeah, I like the cast in the 4th one, thought the movie was the best of the series as well.

This is one of those really tough original versus sequel arguments (like godfather 1 or 2, Star wars or Empire, SPiderman 1 or 2 etc)
I love the horror side of Alien especially the htaching scene. Asformer army I sometimes have issues with the mechaincs of the marines but I still love it. Bill Paxton alone steals so many scenes. GAME OVER MAN GAME OVER

I saw alien when it was in theatres in79, I was 14 and it scared crap out of me. Even today watching extended version, it is so gritty and the atmospher is so heavy that it still makes me uncomfortable-and i've seen it 100 times. The alien is the all time kreepiest thing ever-nobody can come up with anything as scary and original as the 1st alien...the cgi versions in 3 and 4 and in AvP aren't nearly as good. The 1st is so dark and gothic and i love the performances of the cast... very well done.
Having said that, i aslo like Aliens just not as much...both movies are in my top 10 all time. Bill Paxton very funny and private Vasqez kicks serious booty! Aliens is uniqe in it works as both a sequel and it stands alone if you knew nothing about the 1st movie.

This is a tough one as I liked the tone of dread and suspense in the first one, but the second is a terrific action movie.
I think I'd have to give the edge to Aliens. Like T1K said, the climax is classic.
(And I think the director's cut makes 3 a much better film.)

alien of course.,,the others where good but not that good. Sitting in the theater watching it was likr watching King Kong for the first time..no sequel or remake touch them.

I'd go with Alien. I still think it's one of the scariest movies ever, as well as being intelligent. Aliens is a great sequel, one of the best ever, and it's amazing how different it is from the original, while still being (nearly the) equal, IMO.

I have both. I haven't watched either in quite awhile although I did watch a bit of Alien not too long ago. I was trying to think of something to watch today. Maybe I'll pop in Aliens.

I prefer Aliens. I just love so many things about it. I really like Ripley.I thought it was cool to have a strong female character facing her ultimate fear and still kicking butt. I think it has great characters and a great cast. Plus it's fun all around.
Alien is very scary to me, which is good, but not enough "Xenomorph" action. Aliens has "Xenomorphs" galore. I think the Alien itself is one of the scariest ever seen. The Predator was freaky looking, the "Thing" was disturbing, but the Alien was scary as heck. Of all scifi aliens, the Alien is the best. Thats why it's called "The Alien". It's the epitome of aliens.
Again, it's Aliens for me.

I love Alien but nothing can compare to the first time I saw Aliens at the theater. The audience and I were completely taken in by it. Getting shocked at the shock scenes cheering (there was an audible gasp even when Burke turned off the monitor to hide the fact that Ripley and Newt were fending off face huggers)at the cheer scenes (Ripley taking control of the car, the drop ship finally coming to rescue Ripley and Newt, "Get away from her you *****!"). Something like that is really rare.

as Bro said - Not to mention "GAME OVER MAN GAME OVER"

I like Aliens 4 the Best,.. with Aliens a close second.
But what made 4 so great,.. was the already established history of the universe.
