This is according to Box Office Mojo (and I have no idea whether it takes into account adjustments for inflation). Even though I gain nothing from this venture, I'm tickled s**tless, again, that a movie based on a comic has the biggest opening weekend of all time!!! Now if this doesn't give Joss some well-deserved accolades, I don't know what will (and this doesn't even take Sunday into account yet)...

is that the record?

Yes, it would be the record by some distance. Harry Potter Deathly Hallows pt 2 holds the record at $169 mill at the moment. Disney Marvel are also predicting a box office of $641 Worldwide so far.

What I find SO astounding about the success of not only THE AVENGERS, but at the success of movies based off comics in general is that, when I was kid growing up (in upper Elementary, Middle and High School) I, and the kids like me who read comics, were tortured mercilessly for reading "funny books" and now they're a HUGE market theatrically. It's funny how the world changes in thirty someodd years....

Well, technically, it IS Sunday, O:M, but we just don't know what today's grosses will be. I'm thinking that THE AVENGERS will probably wind up with a full weekend gross somewhere north of 220 million, which is a HUGE haul for a single weekend (and, incidentally, kinda pays for the movie in one weekend, as if it hadn't already been paid for by all the cash from overseas)....

Whoops, I meant that Sunday's profit's haven't been counted yet since it has until midnight to get higher. I didn't mean to say that an entire day didn't happen, I'm just still living on Saturday time. :smiley1:

Edit: It's now a Yahoo article, so that makes it official. :wink_y: :smiley1::

Between this, and the licensing merch they will undoubtably sell, it looks like Disney's bounced back from John Carter quite well and will have a profitable year (at least in terms of the movie division... Particularly if Brave does well with the little girl market)

While Thor and the Cap movie did pretty well last summer, the Avengers success should also really juice the sequels. They won't do Avengers business, but I'm guessing they will do better than the original films.

^Good point.

I added to the till again today. This time took the wife and daughter too, since I knew it was okay for her minus a few brief eye cover-ups.

I'm happy to see it do well to. It DESERVES it. It's a damn fine movie, comic adaptation or no. It's fun, well-written and well-acted. The real deal for sure.

I really don't think I will be "geeking out" at TDKR as much as I did at The Avengers. Not that I hate the Nolaniverse but I've never been on board 100% and I'm a big Batman fan. TDK was a great film but it always drags in parts for me. Not so with the Avengers, which was paced very well IMO. Begins was OK but again parts dragged. With TDKR I've said it before but Bane really doesn't interest me. I might be proven wrong but right now the excitement is not there for me.

I'll go see Batman and I'm sure it will do well, but the Avengers felt like an event. I hadn't been that excited to see a movie in a long time and it made me feel like a kid again.

I agree. THE AVENGERS had an almost STAR WARS feel to it (like when EMPIRE or ROTJ came out) and I think that, no matter how popular TDKR is, I don't think it's going to be able to capture that....

I don't really see it. I think DKR will be a fantastic movie. I think it will do extremely well. But I don't think it's going to have stronger opening than Avengers. Avengers is the type of movie you can watch over and over; a fun popcorn flick. DKR will be like DK before it; a great movie, but an emotionally draining experience. Not one to see again and again.

My 2 cents. But as Brian said a few days back, we all win when these movies do well. And when one is done THIS well, it deserves all the accolades it can get.

I don't want people to think that I'm a Nolan Batman hater, I'm not. I like the films, have a small issue with his voice, but they are non-the-less great films with great acting. With this being the final film in Nolan's trilogy I am excited for that, as well as scared for what "The Legend Ends" means. I will see it, and I will no doubt like it, but I just don't think it will have the effect that The Avengers has had on me. The Avengers was funny, action-packed, had alot of dark moments, and twists-and-turns. TDKR will probably be dark all the through with some funny moments throughout. Not a deal-breaker, just saying that it'll have a different feeling for me than The Avengers, but I am still looking forward to seeing it too.

Yeah, right now I doubt that TDKR will equal or surpass the Avengers box office.
But it will be interesting to find out.

Yeah, not going to happen. As well as being a good film, the Avengers is a event for all the family. DKRs will have its fan base (I will go) but its more a niche market and Bane is no Joker.
