I like them too.
I think they didn't catch on because Super Mario 2 was such a strange game compared to the others. It doesn't fit in. It's still a lot of fun to play. I liked the secret doors and the plants and such.

SMB2 really didnt fit in with the others but i did like the play mechanics.
