View Full Version : First time buyer saying hi and seeking help

Hi there! I'm new to the forum (first post!) ... and new to Mego collecting too! I've been browsing through the messages a bit and you guys seem like a bunch of regular Joes. I've got a weird situation on my hands and I wonder if you joes can help me out.

A friend of mine at work has been collecting figures for a long time and after listening to her stories of how she got this or that toy and then turned around and doubled (or better) her money, I figured to give it a shot myself when I saw an ad in the local paper for a lot of twelve dolls. I got to admit that I felt pretty B.A. after scoring it (booyah me!) and I even got a little bit excited when I finally got the box back to my apartment.

So the ones in best shape were Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Conan while the rest had more obvious little defects here and there. There was nothing that looked too bad to my newbie eyes and while I'm sure most of them are missing an accessory or two, I'm generally pleased. There were only two things wrong, one of which really troubles me.

The first issue, which isn't really a big deal, but hey it's my opinion. I think the Thor looks pretty lame. It's in good shape, but the armbands looks like legwarmers and the blue circles on the uniform chest look dumb too. I was just expecting ... I don't know ... more? It was a letdown, but I'm guessing that's just part of the business, right?

The second issue why I'm posting (can you believe that I've been accused of taking too long to get to the point?) is the Isis doll (well, I'm like 99.9% sure it is Isis). Yikes.

Like Thor, she is in good enough shape, but when I was unpacking everything I came across something that troubles me. I undressed all of the figures to inspect them and when I got to Isis, I found some hair (and I'm not talking about the hair on her head) in the *ahem* region. It looks like it was glued on quite carefully, so much so that it looks like it could be a factory job. I sure hope that is not the case though. I don't know if this is important, but for the record, the curtains match the drapes.

I'm too embarrased to mention it directly to my friend at work. This seems the sort of thing that HR would frown upon. So, I'm somewhat anonymously asking here for some advice.

I definitely don't want this icky figure in my collection. The original ad did not mention that Isis was pubescent. Should I send a strongly worded (and less wordy ... I've got to work on that!) letter to the seller?

My first thought is to resell it on ebay (or here). Should I include this fact in my listing or just leave it out? Would I be better off using an xacto knife or some solvent to remove the hair? Would attempting to fix this problem actually lessen the figure's value? I'm not sure what would be worse: hair or obvious scratch marks! Your advice is absolutely appreciated.

Well, I'm planning on sticking around. I like most of my first lot and I'm guessing that if I do my homework and ask for help occasionally, it will get even better. Am I right?

Not knowing where the hair came from I'd chuck it in the trash. For sure i wouldn't touch it. All sort of crotch crickets could be on that thing.

Is disposing of this figure really the best course of action? When fully clothed, you can't tell anything is wrong with it. Even in it's current condition, it should still be worth $40-$50, right?

Is it a T1 or a T2 body? The early Megos were like that. Later runs went with a tiny landing strip (Mego was notorious for cost cutting measures).

Of course, you don't find body hair at all on the modern re-Mego figures... they are completely bald. So it is a pretty reliable way to tell a natural '70s Isis from a skanky repro. Sounds like you got a keeper!

Is it complete with box?

OK ... I'm glad to have provided a little comic relief. I didn't think it was funny at first, but I guess it is partly funny, but I still think it's pervy too. Who thinks of stuff like this? Seriously!

How much of the action figure can I replace and it still be considered Isis? Can I pop off the legs (they're hair-free), arms and head and just put those pieces on a different waist (and maybe a different torso too)? I'm a little nervous trying to take it apart and reassemble it ... that's why my first thought was to just try shaving it with a sharp blade or removing it with the Mego-equivalent of Nair, whatever that may be.

Some cool trivia: Jane Badler (Diana from V) was in a 1981 Nair commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOuT60caDtU

What a predicament. I truly empathize with you.
Nothing like undressing a beautiful doll only to be
faced with a jungle like situation.

Many of us were teenagers in the seventies, so trust me when I tell
you we have been there.

Here is a link that may help you solve the challenging problem
you have with your hirsute little action figure.

She will be back to Barbie standards in no time.

Good luck and try to keep your chin up during this trying time.

I say cut the hair off the hooha and glue it on her face...immediately you have a Sampson Bible Greats Character...long hair...bracelets...sandals...head band...it's all there. Plus with the WW you found you could slap a dress on her and you've got a ready made Delilah to go with your Sampson - a two-pack similar to the Walton's figures.

We've got some great Repro Box members here, I'm sure they could hook you up. These are only suggestions. BTW - a picture would be really helpful, unless you can't find any batteries for your camera?

Don't change a thing. If it kept us entertained for 4 pages, the odds are pretty good it will strike the fancy of some collector when you go to sell it.

In the meantime, I'd keep her clothes on... you don't want to give the other figures ideas.

Welcome to the Museum! Isis is one of my favorite Megos so I am sorry to hear that some weirdo did this to an Isis figure. If it were mine I would most definitely try and figure out a way to (not sure how to word this nicely) "debush" her.
:ugh_y:

Without trying to sound disgusting you may try removing as much of it as possible then use something like Goo Gone to remove any left over adhesive.

Like Thor, she is in good enough shape, but when I was unpacking everything I came across something that troubles me.

That would probably trouble me a bit, too. Don't feel bad.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably try to get rid of the offending matter after trying to discern how it's adhered. Maybe Goo Gone might help loosen it, making it easier to clean up. If you were going to sell it on eBay, I'd explain in delicate terms what the deal was and you tried to fix it. She has panties, anyway--I doubt you'll hurt it too much trying to fix it.

People are weird--when I was six, I drew some chesticles on my little sister's Mrs. Beasley doll. Didn't go over well.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. I was starting to worry that those requests for pictures were serious! I'm glad that I haven't misjudged you guys, but it was a near thing.

So Goo-Gone sounds like a good first step. Is there anything to worry about, such as discoloration or worse? If this is as basic as it sounds, I'll start there.

I don't believe Goo Gone will do any harm. I have used it many times before and never had it harm whatever I was using it on.

I'm never gonna give you up! That's the tag line for Orange Crush. . . errrrr, no wait, that's not quite right. Hmmmmm.....errrrrrr . . . . .eh?

Or was that 7-UP? (Side note: is it proper to capitalize the 'P' in '7-Up'?)

Oh! Wow! I just keep sidetracking myself! NOW I can't stop thinking about 7-UP commercials and I don't even drink soda!! It's remarkable how catchy those theme songs and melodies were, especially in selling us products that are harmful. We've been duped! It's people! . . . . (I'll try to avoid the Charlton Heston association here and not talk about Planet of the Apes action figures which have me so obsessed that I cannot do anything except keep thinking about them and thinking about them and will do anything to get them away from people who have them. . . .Whoa. That. Was. Weird.):juggleyes_y:

. . . . what am I writing about??
OH!

Orange
Crush
errrrrrrrrr.......... THAT was what I was talking about! I had to go back and reread what I wrote above. It looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!! LOL

This was the song I was thinking of. They changed the Rick Astley lyrics and I can't find them anywhere on the Internet, so I'm just kinda making these up from a vague memory of what I think they sounded like about 25 years ago. . .maybe 30?? It's hard to remember sometimes. I'm just so annoyed with my friend for selling me a plant for my front yard, but he didn't tell me it was damaged. I just got back from picking it up after paying him. Sorry. I just can't get over it.

He sold me a bush with action figures glued all over it!
Can you believe that?!:xmas-smiley-030::costumed-smiley-049

Anyhow, here are the lyrics from that old Orange Crush errrrrrr, 7-UP (?) commercial that I'm trying to remember. Don't laugh if I get them wrong!!!

I'm never gonna . . .FLIP you off,
I'm just gonna . . . .JOIN yer board.
I'm always gonna . . .CON yer peeps
And annoy you.

Y'know, looking back, it's sorta weird that the song was trying to sell soda.

PHEW! This is a long post! G'nite!
