Penn State's Joe Paterno is gravely ill and nearing death, as his family rushes to his side | PennLive.com (http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2012/01/legendary_football_coach_joe_p.html)
I'm conflicted about the man in wake of the Sandusky scandal, but it's such a bizarre coincidence that his health has declined so dramatically since being fired as head coach of Penn State's football team.

He is no longer near death.
It's sad this all had to come about like it did. I always respected him and the program he ran. I cannot continue that respect in light of what transpired, but I won't speak ill of him. He made a TERRIBLE error in judgement. Guilt probably had more to do with this than cancer.

I don't think any sympathy should be given nor excuses to be made. The fact is, he brushed a filthy crime under the carpet because the kid's well being and innocence obviously wasn't as valuable and worth protecting as much as money, his and the schools rep or that Sandusky creep.
Just like the Catholic church.

Summed up nicely Scott. I always admired and respected him UNTIL all this came out. I just no longer see him remotely as I once did before.

One just has to wonder WHERE a soul like that actually goes to spend eternity...

Without a doubt Paterno's legacy is forever tarnished. If anything his death will spare him the pain and embarrassment that will likely come from this upcoming trial. Hopefully he made peace with his maker and that was enough.

Yahoo and many of the other media outlets have chosen not to give a complete summary of the Washington Post interview, so I'll post a little balance:
"The Paternos say they think about the real potential victims every time they look at their own children. “I got three boys and two girls,” Paterno said. “It’s sickening.” His knee-jerk response is to go back to Flatbush. “Violence is not the way to handle it,” he said. “But for me, I’d get a bunch of guys and say let’s go punch somebody in the nose.” Sue Paterno is more blunt. “If someone touched my child, there wouldn’t be a trial, I would have killed them,” she said. “That would be my attitude, because you have destroyed someone for life.”"
My best guess is that Joe just didn't get it...but I can't read minds.

"The Penn State University Police provides all law enforcement and security services to the University Park campus. We employ:
# 46 full-time armed officers
# Six traffic and parking officers
# Five police dispatcher/recorders
# Approximately 200 students as auxiliary officers and escorts
The department provides 24-hour patrol services to the campus and University-owned properties year round. The University Police is governed by a state statute that gives our officers the same authority as municipal police officers."

Apparently a student run college publication broadcast the false story of the coaches death on TWITTER. The editor for that story has now resigned.
