This news does not bode terribly well for the second installment of the God of Thunder. MARVEL and Paramount are gonna have to scramble now to find someone to direct this thing and I only hope that doesn't mean it's going to be some rushed P.O.S. like X3 was.
Who do you guys think should take a crack at Thor? MIB41 and I were talking earlier this week about POTC and (although I've never seen any of them) they LOOK huge and impressive and THAT'S what THOR needs. Perhaps MARVEL could talk Gore Verbinski into helming it?
My first choice would be Peter Jackson, but he's busy HOBBIT-ing around right now....
So----who else?
Feel free to comment and suggest, please...!

Nope. I'd MUCH rather see him get to helm the next BATMAN reboot. Maybe he would give us the big-screen BATMAN I've alway seen in my head...

Lets see. Who's not working on a project? How about not ruffling Kenneth Branagh's feathers anymore and offering more money to come back?
Stephen Norrington of Blade 1 & League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Matthew Vaughn of X-Men: First Class was originally supposed to direct Thor.
Sam Riami had a Thor concept in 2001. He could pick it up now.
Would like to see Nicholas Meyer back in the directors chair but he doesn't like super hero films and is closed-minded about doing them, (tho he does like mythology).
Paul Verhooven, Bryan Singer, Peter Weir, Brad Bird, Robert Rodriguez, The Wachowski Bros., almost any of the Harry Potter Directors.
Not Gulliermo Del Toro, not the guy who did the Fantastic Four films, not Brett Ratner or Rob Zombie, not Frank Miller.

Wouldn't that make Johnny Depp be Thor?

would love to see Gulliermo Del Toro take a crack at the Marvel universe somewhere, but I think he's not a good fit for an established franchise with a look already in place. Mybe he'd be the guy to reboot the FF, and he's been mentioned in conjunction with Dr. Strange.

^Wasn't that a scheduling conflict? But maybe now his plate is clear?
Going for the obvious here, but Jon Favreau?
Some of these other names sound good. What's Joe Johnston doing? Oh wait, let's keep him busy on Cap 2.

How about M. Night SHAMalan...so it can blow...and put us all to sleep...that would apply to George Lucas at this point as well...lol.

Verbinski would be an INCREDIBLE idea. But unfortunately he doesn't go into much of anything unless the studio is completely behind it...with cash. He has grand visions, just as Peter Jackson does. That is why their films look as impressive as they are. Great ideas bro. Unfortunately the hero industry is slowly becoming a formulated cookie-cutter machine. Their all beginning to look alike and sound alike. My gut tells me the studio's chief priority will be to find a director that can bring this film in on budget. They figure the fan boys and kids will line up regardless. Sad news to hear she has left this production though. She completely understood the character and knew what was needed to tell his story with a flare for style without leaning too hard on the campier side of the concept. She will be missed. And I'm sure the film will suffer for it...greatly! :ugh_y:

Let's not write anything we can't take back.

I beg to differ with you, TB. I think GDT would be a slam-dunk for THOR, especially when I think about some of the stuff from Pan's Labyrinth. I think he could easily work within the confines of the establihed "reality" whilst bringing some of his own vision into it as well.
Just had another thought, too. The director or "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" would probably be a good choice for THOR, too....

Brett Rattner to direct with Eddie Murphy as Balder the Brave and Jackie Chan as Mr. Hyde:silly:

It's probably not going to be anyone like that - they're probably going to go down a list and end up with someone not too well known, who meets their basic criteria and is available. Any of the guys you're talking about probably has the next 5 years mapped out in front of them.
It's probably not going to be anyone with a developed and known style - in any case. It's part 2 for one thing - so "vision" isn't really what they're going to be looking for. The other thing is two directors left - so my guess is the script stinks.

BUT - since we're playing pretend, I'd like Werner Herzog to direct. No matter what the script is like, he'd make that thing incredibly entertaining.

Two directors leaving over creative differences does not bode well.

I agree. The man has the vision and the imagination to do THOR justice. When I first saw LOTR: FOTR and saw the Balroc, I thought----man, what this guy could do with Surtur is sick!!!
