View Full Version : Reviews: Seeking Mego Museum Voices!
Now that the book is getting into people's hands, the reviews and reactions are starting to come in. It's so nice to read and hear people's reactions, especially since the response has been very positive.
In the last 48 hours, the book has gotten two (extremely nice) unsolicited reviews. See:
Manly Recommendations For A Busted Knuckles Christmas (http://www.worldsgreatesttoys.com/wgtBlog/?p=88)
and
Book Review: Mania.com (http://www.worldsgreatesttoys.com/wgtBlog/?p=89)
I'm really counting on Mego Museum members to have a voice in the blogosphere, too. I realize some of you are still going through the book, haven't had time yet, or are waiting for Christmas. However, I hope that once you have an opinion, you will voice your reactions on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1893905829?ie=UTF8&tag=worsgretoy-20&linkCode=as2&camp). It doesn't matter whether you actually got the book from Amazon; they allow reviews from anyone who buys from the site (and, really, who doesn't?).
Only a complete sell-out will result in a 2nd Edition (or completely new Mego book), at least from myself and TwoMorrows. So let's be loud and proud!
Thanks for your continued support.

I really enjoyed what Beau Smith wrote, it's not many people who can admit that their toy preferences are pretty much biased to when you grew up. It seems like a simple fact but it's tough for many.

of course the reviews will be good. It's a price guide/reference book. There's no way someone couldn't read it and not say it's good. If it where a novel or something i could see various reviews but not a reference book.

I would say it is a bit more than a reference book. That sounds a bit dry. This was an obvious labor of love and it shows. Ben has shown what makes Mego special but I do agree that I could not see anyone not liking this wonderful book.

It's not a price guide. The only place prices are mention is in conjunction with extremely rare pieces (like the carded Iron Man).
And there is much more to this book than reference. The history of the Mego toy company is also covered. There's a lot of meat to this "reference" book, and it deserves to be reviewed, and get GREAT reviews for handling the material so well.

Reference books can get bad reviews, it happens, I don't think there is some sort of "bell curve" for them. WGT gets good reviews because it is well done.

no way?
What if it contained poor, little or even incorrect information? That would merit a bad review.
What if its reference pictures were unclear or confusing? Again, bad review
What if it contained almost no background on its subject, no first-source information? What if it came to conclusions based on poorly strung together bits of info?
I'm only about halfway through this book and so far, it deserves nothing but praise. In fact, the only complaint one might have is that the information is almost too overwhelming. So far, Benjamin has done an incredible job of encapsulating all the information I've learned here with some fascinating new facts. The interviews with Mego employees and behind-the-scenes stories have given me a better understanding of how decisions were made at Mego. And the pictures... of those gloriously detailed pictures!
Perhaps it was not intended as such, and if not I apologize beforehand, but such extreme statements make me question the motivation behind them.

Thank you! By the way, which one is your review? Are you Mark Bishop? If so, I appreciate the awesome review.
