I always thought it was interesting reading the many different local grocery stores there are ....
Name all the grocery stores in a 5 mile radius around you ...
If you live in the boonies you can extend farther than 5 miles.
Small convenience stores dont count

that is wild:smiley1:
I think I recall when traveling out of my bubble that these stores here have other names elsewhere
Isn't KROGER the same as Vons or Ralphs?
I would not say that Whole Foods is standard stuff. :smiley1:
The only local we have is HEB. Named after the man who started the chain; Howard E. Butt. Seriously.

Yup. Over rated.
Not to mention they claim to support local farmers when in fact they purchase from crops that are grown overseas and shipped here. Plus they have a high mark up.
They are going around and buying up small local mom and pop stores. They did that in Portland but the only one store that didn't sell was New Seasons, which I LOVE! Much better than Whole Foods and truly support local farmers and economy.

I can walk to Albertsons and now they have just opened a New Seasons that is also within walking distance. So between the two, I can get regular stuff or good stuff.

I disagree about Whole Foods being overrated...expensive, yes...but not overrated. I personally love it...it's a kickarse store...here's the one in Oakland...it's HUGE (that's just one corner)...

Oakland has literally tons of Mexican markets...one third of Oakland is Hispanic...the biggest chains are Mi Pueblo, Mi Tierra. and Los Mexicanos.
Mi Pueblo is a kickarse market on High St and International...it has a taqueria, a deli, unique produce, the largest carniceria in Oakland, the best Mexican breads and pastries...and it's also famous for it's outdoor grilled chickens (pollos a la parilla)...for under $10...you get a whole chicken with tortillas ans salsa...delicious...a better and healthier option than KFC...that's for damn sure...

You are right that their meat selection being poor...very poor...the same with veggies.
But I love their packaged stuff...like nuts, cereals, chips, beef jerky, beer, wines...stuff like that...but yes...you are right about their meats and veggies...Whole Foods stomps all over them in those categories for sure...lol.

Hec contributing the pix-- Loving that. Yes, Whole Foods is awesome. I worship there once a week! I harvest most of my food from the ocean, so there's always fresh fish and lobster at my house-- Whole Foods is great for condiments, side dishes, non seafood meats and beverages, SI SI!!! Me gusta mucho!!!
And I love Hector, too. Keep thozzzze piczzzz coming, big guy! How about some fodder for the juicer???

At ten miles from home to the west, we have Meijer, D&W, and Wal-Mart.
Ten miles from home to the east, we have Family Fare
That being said, D&W is the expensive store, Family Fare has no selection, and I would die of starvation before I set foot in Wal-Mart, so Meijer it is.

Target
Whole Foods
Trader Joe's

...and then an assortment of upscale indys - Carf@gna's, Hills Mkt & Weiland's, plus a Mexican grocery.
I avoid Walmart; I don't buy groceries (like - a whole order) at Target; Whole Foods is too much $ for me b/c I can get similar stuff for less at other places.
Meijer is the best overall.

Isn't KROGER the same as Vons or Ralphs?
I work for a subsidiary of Kroger called Gerbes (we're actually a Dillons store). The Kroger stores also include Ralphs, King Soopers, City Market, Dillons, Smith's, Fry's, Quality Food Center, Baker's, Owen's, JayC, Pay Less Supermarkets, Scott's, Food4Less, and Fred Meyer.
The main stores here are Gerbes, Hy-Vee, Schnucks (although the rumor is that we've purchased their stores in central Missouri, with the take-over being final early next year [this might be utter hogwash]), Aldi, Wal-Mart, and Moser's. We've dominated this area and have pretty much owned Kansas (especially around Topeka and Wichita) for decades, but Hy-Vee is simply fearless and won't hesitate to build across the street from either us or Wal-Mart.

This is basically what the inside of our local Wegman's looks like. As I have said before the county in Maryland where I reside does not allow beer and wine sales at grocery stores. Fortunately, there is a killer store nearby that has a selection that beats out any grocery store where I have seen beer and wine carried. It is the "go to" store for anything obscure or hard to find.
