I had a shotgun my brother in law had given me, some old piece of crap...but after a couple of years he asked for it back :smiley1: what a loser..why give it in the first place right?
well anywayz, I saw some at wal-mart that were pretty cool, one was a black one 12G for $187 and a Brown & black old school looking one 20G for $227
I filled out the forms that take a week to be able to get them, anyone see these or know if they're decent for the price? I don't know much about shotguns

I used to own an old Mossberg
Great shotgun - never failed me :)
Used it mostly for shooting groundhogs and possums

The Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun is the way to go for self-defense...super reliable...solid shotgun...and costs only about $350...the best shotgun for the buck...

Low class...I wouldn't have given it back...even if it was a crappy shotgun...I'd rather throw it into the garbage can...out of pure principle.

Seriously though I do dislike people that give you something and then want it back. Makes a lot of sense to give it huh?
Anyway...I know nothing of the Wal-Mart guns. With Wal-Mart selling it I would be a bit leary. I put little faith in Wal-Mart's merchandise.
Best of luck to you! :cool_y:

I'm guessing the newer models are easier to handle - my old Mossberg had one hell of a kickback.

No matter what kind you get just make sure you first test it out firing at the hip

I don't much about guns (never owned one). Someone I know who does own a gun for home protection told me that they would recommend taking a gun safety course and give you an opportunity to shoot various firearms. They said, they will give you tips on different guns for different purposes and probably good advice as to whether it is worth buying a basic model at Wal-Mart or going up market a bit knowing that you are basically using it for self protection. I personally have avoided owning one because I know it would have to be loaded at all times if there was a break in. I know it is easy to imagine that you would remain cool under pressure be able to load, take aim, etc. but it usually doesn't work out that way. I just have never felt comfortable taking the risk in the offchance that my kids found it and started fooling around with it. Ironically, my dad had two guns that were kept underneath his bed and loaded at all times. I knew not to even think about looking at them unless I wanted a beating and although he basically had it for home protection; I never saw him fire a single round even though I knew he had seen combat action in Korea and grew up on a farm hunting so I don't think he would have had any reservations about using it if someone broke in.

It's actually uncommon to find guns in any department store.
Walmart and K-mart are two big exceptions.
In the sticks (like around where I am) most people get their guns at the local sport/fishing shop

There is some hole in the wall shop we always pass when we vacation in West Virginia called "Honeymooners Gun shop". I have been half tempted to park and take a look around but then I let common sense get in the way.

You'll probably have some work to do on your house (walls, etc.) in addition to cleaning up your floors, if you use a shot gun for home defense. That said it can be effective. And you don't need to be a very good shot.

Hopefully, it will never have to be used. I have my trusty Pug and Golden Retriever for home protection and if things get really out of control, my 11 year old has a replica Red Rider BB Carbine Action BB Gun right out Xmas Story and that thing has some power for a one pump BB gun. We had some rabbits in our garden a couple of weeks ago and joked around with my wife that I should shoot them with Ole Blue. My wife told me to go ahead thinking it would scare them off until I informed her that I probably would kill the rabbit. She insisted no way could I kill a rabbit with a BB gun. I guess she really has no clue the damage that bb gun can inflict. I can shoot an aluminum can from at least 50 yards away and it shoots a hole right through it. I realize a rabbit and aluminum can are different but it would be a 15 yard shot and not 50....as a side note I was kidding about shooting the rabbit and surprised that my wife was insistent that the bb gun could not kill it.

Back in the early 80's it was my trusted Mossberg that saved me and my dog from getting attacked by a rabid skunk.
He was chasing my dog and I ran inside to get the gun.
When I got outside he decided to chase me instead ....
I jumped into the back of my pick-up bed for safety and popped him from there.
It sounds a little funny, but at the time it was scary as hell.

It does sound like a great cartoon, Mike...:wink_y:
Was this skunk even rabid, or just going through a difficult emotional phase?
But I shouldn't say anything: I've never even seen a skunk, far from meeting one that's in attack mode...

Seriously, after I shot him I took the body to my local dog catcher ... He's also the local game warden.
He sent the skunk's head to the state capital (Trenton) for examination.
A month later the results came back he was rabid.

I don't think animals like skunks, opossums, etc. are generally aggressive in nature toward other animals and especially humans unless they are rabid. They must live in great numbers around our area since seeing one that became "roadkill" isn't uncommon but it is rare that I see one walking around in the wild.

Growing up in a hunting family I've fired just about every legal firearm available. I've never heard of a 15 gauge. Twelve is the most powerful commonly used shotgun shell. I've seen 10 guage occasionally but I don't think anyone still makes ammunition for it. My personal favorite is the .20 gauge. I have an Ithaca over/under double barrel that is eerily accurate. You can get different loads for various ranges and targets.
For home defense, go with the widest spread. I doubt anyone would really want to kill an intruder if they can help it. A spread shell will distribute pellets in a wide perimeter that will wound but unlikey kill within 10 feet. A tight-spread shell or a slug, at that same range, will remove the intruder's torso while his legs kick around on your kitchen floor.

D, the 12 is fine, just be prepared for what comes with it. It's got a helluva recoil, it's loud as hell and it's going to do mass damage. My advice is to go out to a field somewhere, private property, and practice with ear protection. You need to get used to what it's capable of before you go to use it when it really, really counts. I hope that never happens. Just go blow the crap out of some coffee cans for an afternoon.

That might be true, but that kind of thinking is also very dangerous for yourself and your family.
If you pull out a gun and only wound him, he will come back at you if he can -probably with his own gun and he will try and kill you.
It's why cops are taught not to fire at legs.

+1 on the model 500 Mossberg! I have had mine for 25 years now and it is a great gun. It came with both a shot and slug barrel. A friend of mine sold his with the shot barrel and gave me the old slug barrel so I use that when it's in home protection mode. We have a few different handguns too. Maggy even has her own 38 and a carry permit from PA.

Crossbows are also illegal to own in most states due to their lethal and silent nature. My friend's father has a few that he is allowed to use for hunting due to a handicap and I was allowed to shoot it at a target a few times...really bad arse.
You definitely have to be prepared to kill if self defense is a primary motivation. I believe the law in most of the land is that you can only use one if your life is in peril. With that said, you don't want another side of the story.
