In 8th grade I had a bigass poster and and a nylon banner of QR in my room. Not to mention assorted pins stuck in my Iron Maiden Painters hat, a regular painter's hat not the foreign legion one with the 2 flaps on the back.

In 8th grade, I wore a frickin' groove in my Metal Health album from playing it so much.

Good times.

Quiet Riot was the 2nd Rock Show I ever saw. I was shocked when I read the news today. I too am wondering if drugs played a role in his early demise.

I used to love QR as a kind of tongue-in-cheek comedic-metal band... which I think hits pretty close to the mark of what they were trying to accomplish. I actually met Rudy Sarzo (bass player for QR, who also played with Ozzie) when I was working for KLOL in Houston in 1984... he was a super-nice guy, at least to me. Never met DuBrow, but he seemed like a personable sort of fellow. I'm sorry for his friends and family that he's gone.

Quiet Riot was the first Metal band I ever knew of (I don't count KISS as metal. Esp. after "Beth" and their Disco flirtations). My older sister had the Metal Health album, and it was her first purchase of that kind of music as well. I believe QR was the first metal band to ever have a #1 album on the Billboard charts, despite the fact their biggest hits were recycled from some long-forgotten metal band (whose name escapes me). They were the first "crossover" metal band to make it into pop, and really used MTV to it's fullest potential.

The guy was good at what he did. A real character front man. A shame.

By the way, I would submit that Judas Priest had earlier metal success than QR, as did Motley Crue around the same time. Not to take away the popular (if not critical) success and influence QR enjoyed for its brief shining moment of absurdist lyrics and gonzo posturing (and I mean that in a good way...).

Yeah Kevin Dubrow was a down to earth cool guy. I met him a couple of times here in Vegas over the years. I also saw Quiet Riot perform at the Hard Rock, i believe in 1998 or 1999 , the show sold out, funny crowd, alot a people stuck in the 80's that night.

Metal Health was a favorite of mine as a teen!

RIP Kevin! Im sure him & Rand Rhoads are talking about the old times right now!

This was my morning bombshell. I know no one will see my post but this man was a pretty great person. I met him three years ago in Beloit, Wisconsin at the Riverfest with Cinderella. I am going to look for the pictures. He took the time to shake my hand and let me tell him stories of how I used to worship him as a kid. He was truly and inspiration and I am really saddened he is gone. I am so glad I met him!!!!!

Another one of my childhood 80's icons are gone. Who's next? :(

I don't know exactly what to say here as posting about Kevin in this forum
seems more superfluous than in the other forums I post at that are music oriented

(Case in point: I saw an equal amt. of inaccuracies about Kevin's work/career and insults thrown
at Kevin's work in 1 1/2 pages here on the Musuem board as I did in a much more dense
15 pages at another posting arena with usually much more vicious flamers as regulars on the boards)...

Oh well...

Growing up in the 1980s, being a fan of many "hair metal" bands and being
a vocalist in a band for over 20 years...it was bound that I was to be affected
positively by Kevin's work...and I was...

R.I.P. KEVIN DUBROW

Its hard to believe I'm writing this, but, yes, Kevin DuBrow---one of my biggest
influences as a rock and roll frontman has passed away (yesterday early evening).

Although I've only met him personally a handful of times (and corresponded with him via
e-mail occasionally), I feel as if I've lost someone uber-special in my life.

Since I discovered Kevin and his band QUIET RIOT in the early 80s I have been
influenced by him as singer, yes, but even moreso as showman and a rock "warrior" who
has soldiered on thru so many incarnations of his vision of QUIET RIOT it boggles the
rock n roll mind. He is truly a potent inspiration to anyone who believes in the spirit of
rock n roll.

Many times I met him he made me laugh with his off-color perverted humor, his colorful
rock anecdotes and his overall fan-friendly demeanor.

I'll never forget the e-mail he sent me after I requested to know about an upcoming
QUIET RIOT album...he said "it wasn't finished just yet" but offered to show me the
artwork----well, I won't say exactly what it was---but suffice it to say ---- beastiality
was involved----frankly, it cracked me up --- bless ya Kevin for taking the time to try
(successfully) to tickle my funny femur.

I know as big as an influence on me as Kevin was---our tastes in hard rock music were
almost radically different----Kevin preferring a more straight blues "technically sound"
approach and me preferring the more quirky, "garagey" and glammy side of hard rock---
and now, as I listen to QUIET RIOT's last album ReHab I think to myself how lucky Kevin
and his fans are to have had him record something more definitive to his influences and
heart before he left us.

Kevin was an incredible influence in my life---and will continue to be so

Bless you Kevin---and may you have peace "across the bay"----

My band opened for QUIET RIOT on three occasions in the late 90s
and it brought me closer to Kevin and his band as well as those that knew him
a lot better than I----Kevin's recent death was so unexpected
but one shining light at this time has been that the relationships formed in the 90s are
helping me get thru this sad time with a feeling of closure out in L.A. in 2007

I will continue to keep in contact with those close to Kevin who are acquaintances of
mine and pay tribute to his life in any way possible

It's comforting to hear Megoheads here on the board that have nice things to say about
Kevin DuBrow---a guy who was good enough at what he did to be a notable influence
to me and many, many others

Any way...people have different definitions of what "metal" is...

There is no ONE definition of "metal" and that's not my opinion...its just reality

Actually, personally, I could care less how people classify QR, but I
do believe they deserve a certain level of respect regardless---and make no
mistake there are many well-respected metal fans who take what Quiet Riot
did seriously----as "metal" (believe it or not) albeit a different part of the
metal genre than Motorhead or Priest

QUIET RIOT was Randy Rhoads' cherished "baby"---he started the band
with a very close friend (Kelly Garni) and it was his first notable succesful
project---unfortunately it wasn't successful ENOUGH to invalidate
joining OZZY OSBOURNE

QUIET RIOT would've been lost to the wind---but KEVIN DUBROW picked up
the pieces and soldiered on. I admire Kevin for that...the music biz is a tough one...
DuBrow and those close to Randy speculated that one day
Rhoads might have rejoined QUIET RIOT...unfortunately Rhoads died in 1982
and that's all it remained...speculation

So yes, Rhoads was heavily involved with (and believed IN) QUIET RIOT to
a certain extent---I am realistic enough to acknowledge it was not his
first priority in later years due to wanting to make a living and a bigger name
for himself

P.S. draconianguard---wow---that's interesting to hear that such a diehard
QR fan (or at least "former" diehard) hangs around here----cool you posted that

I still love Metal Health, Condition Critical and QR 3. I then went to middle school and learned of heavier bands like Slayer, Exodus, Metallica, Motorhead, Nuclear Assault, Corrosion Of Conformity, Anthrax, S.O.D., etc and was more into that at the time. QR came out with Quiet Riot without DuBrow on vocals which I thought was crap. I then got more into various types of metal, hardcore and punk in high school and still listen to it all today. I still feel those Quiet Riot albums, Twisted Sister Stay Hungry and Motley Crue Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil still hold up for the glam metal genre. Stryper To Hell With The Devil also rules!

I let the guy who posted the zzzzzzzz in my Deep Purple thread slide because it is an opinion but Jesus, a person we admired passed on. Let's have a little dignity for the guy. Yeah. he was a one hit wonder. Big hairy deal.
Look at the Grateful Dead. Some people who classify them as an awesome band (not my cup of tea) but I admire their fans for such loyalty through the years.I also know in their whole entire career they have only been on the charts one time. So, what is the point? What is a chart anyway? Just something that tells you that a lot of people like it. If I spent my time listening to what is on the charts, I would be cutting a lot of awesome music out of my life.

What an honor that must have been Huedell to open for them. I was glad to have my ten minutes of conversation with Kevin but to open for them in their prime? That must have been an exiting time in your life.

Give me a break. Did you not post some harsh comments about Syd Barrett in the thread about his passing last year? This is a forum where we give our opinions. It's sad that Kevin died. He was too young. But this does not make his crap music any better.

Well, I ---for one---- thought a lot of Kevin's music was stellar----(and loved his
vocal tone---dramatic stage presence, respectable drive in the music biz and
his charismatic personality)

Secondly, regardless of our opinions about if Kevin's music was "good"---I agree
with Wrath---you DON'T do what you guys have been doing in a thread about someone's
passing (using it as an opportunity to insult the guy)---its rude----opinions or not

As far as what you posted Wrath about playing with Kevin and QR three times---well, it
was in the late 90s during their resurgance---the hair band resurgance and the Sarzo
reunion and the popular VH-1 BEHIND THE MUSIC on QR---so yeah---it was dang cool

I have always been a huge QR fan and they were quite accessible during those days and
into the present day----in one respect I was lucky because I got closer to Kevin and the
guys in the band----but in another, it makes his passing even more emotional to
deal with

Living in L.A. is strange regarding this as well----everywhere I go I am running
into acquaintances of his----his presence has definitely left a big void here
and has shaken up the scene quite a bit

Music is probably the strongest connection someone can have an earlier time in their life.

It takes them back to specific times, people, places, seasons. Sometimes allowing people to recall exact moments in their lives. Bringing back both good memories and bad.

I remember when I was 11 years old waiting to leave to go to my grandma's wake. I was watching MTV and Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodo came on. Everytime I hear that song I think of my grandmother's passing.

Quiet Riot wasn't the greatest band in the world but maybe their music brings back some good memories for people and to insult them is to insult those memories.

Besides I highly doubt you were lauding Syd Barret's musical genius when you were in 12 years old. You were listening to some "crap" music just like everyone else was....

and you were loving it.
