Can't wait for the new Joss Stone CD. The girl is just amazing:

I think she was signed to Capitol/EMI when she was 14. First CD came out when she was 16. Her last CD from EMI was OK...but she wanted out of her contract and got her wish. Dave Stewart as producer and collaborator is gonna make this new CD better than her previous ones in my opinion. I think that there is also a SUPERGROUP that was also formed recently with Dave Stewart, Joss Stone and Mick Jagger...that's gonna be an interesting CD when it comes out.

Here's a little taste from Idol Gives Back from a few years back with Guitar Legend Jeff Beck:

She just sounds unique because she's a pretty white soul singer...but compared to the likes of Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, etc...she's certainly not any better than the before-mentioned. Perhaps she is in their league (or not)...but not any better.

If you like "vocal gymnastics", then those singers that you just mentioned are fantastic. To each his/her own.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing her at all...she's a great singer...I just can't call her the best because there are so many out there...but she definitely belongs in any top ten list...that's for sure.

Charice Pempengco has some awesome pipes...but she should stop being a cover song singer...singing other people's music is not helping her cause as one of the greats.

Man, I used to really like her in Nightwish. Haven't really caught up with her solo stuff yet, but she is a hell of a singer.

Gah, vocal gymnastics, oversinging, melisma, whatever you want to call it, is not my thing at all, can't stand it.

Oh, hell, yeah!

She is a classically trained lyric soprano with a three octave range. When I hear people claim these American Idol style pop divas are the best vocalists ever, I'm like, no, just no.

I'm also fond of former Xandria lead singer Lisa Middelhauve who is a classic mezzo-soprano.

Hey...opera sopranos...that's fine and dandy...but I'll take Aretha Franklin with some soul singing any day of the week...that's raw organic soulful blues singing...thank you very much.

It all depends what you like...neither is better than the other...but I prefer soul and blues over opera.

Aretha Franklin tried to sing some opera and was terrible...but have an opera diva try to sing some blues...and she'll sound just as terrible as well.

Apples and oranges.

Case in point...Pavarotti...he sounded TERRIBLE singing a Mercury song during a guest singalong with Queen.

Mercury...while not opera-trained nor technically designed for opera...and he was very sick at the time...still sounded pretty good singing along with Spanish soprano...Montserrat Caballé...

Whitney Houston is (or was) a mezzo-soprano...meaning...she could've been an opera singer had she taken that path from childhood...but she obviously loved a different type of music.

Freddie had a voice for Opera. Queen, in my opinion, is like the godfather of modern symphonic metal. Had he been classically trained his voice would have been unearthly. I think we agree on Queen.

Tarja can sing classic opera and metal. She has an smooth, strong voice with an amazing range. Not a chance in hell todays shrill, screeching pop divas like Whitney, Britney or Mariah could match someone like Tarja's voice. We are gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.

Oh please...that's pure eurocentric bias.

Opera and metal...that ain't no soul and blues.

Tarja would simply just sound silly singing a Mariah or Houston song...Tarja has ZERO soul...ZERO blues...she's too mechanical for that type of music...soul and blues are alien concepts to her.

Blue Meanie's singer is a way better SOUL & BLUES singer than Tarja...because Tarja ain't no soul & blues singer.

And why do you bring Britney into this? She sucks!

Me either. Rihanna isn't too offensive to me - she sings the song without a lot of mess and has an interesting voice. Not my kind of music though.

Sharon Jones basically wipes the floor with anyone in this department right now for me.

Wait - TODAY'S Shill screeching pop divas? What decade is it where you are?

Sorry man - I'm such a jerk and I totally understand what you mean, but I couldn't resist. :smiley1:

I actually was trying to think of female vocalists I really like, and I was coming up with names like Neko Case and Cat Powers. Not exactly current. I'm really out of touch.

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings...here them almost every day here in NY on WFUV. The woman can sing. Daptone records is really trying to get the indy record company thing going again. Sort of like the old Stax Records. I think the Dap Kings were Amy Whinehouse's band on her record.

Adelle is also another singer that is AMAZING.

I think Joss was tapped to be Janis Joplin in a movie on Joplin. Vocally, I think she could do it....but they'd have to really "Ugly" Joss up to physically look like Janis.

Lol, it's all good.

I'd just like to add all music has emotion and soul. Not just R&B. If singers like Lady Gaga and Mariah only have "soul" and Tarja doesn't, it's not something I want or need.

A bit of Tarja.

From the New Pornographers...great voice. She get's a lot of airplay on WFUV also. I have to pick up her last solo CD.

Yeah - I mentioned Neko Case as well - she's incredible. I just wish I could think of some newer women vocalists who blow me away like that.

For me with music in general, an interesting style or way of doing things goes a LONG way as oppose to skill. Singing range or the ability to hold notes isn't interesting to me as much as a raw voice with personality - for lack of a better term. Otis Redding is probably my favorite vocalist - as an example.

I don't listen to much new music these days so I can't throw in my two cents. Give me some sweet Karen Carpenter anytime!
