And the SUCKDOMINUS FIGURE is SOLD OUT! Not even a full day. Shows how quick his drops sell out. The SUCKPEGS will eventually sell out as always. The Shark Suckpeg is cool so I can see it selling out fast.

Looks like Destro and Baroness are sold out now too as of Sunday night. Still Destro left, although you think that anyone buying these would be buying all three as a set.

It says on the website that the GI Joe pegs were limited to 10 each? I'm surprised they lasted until now. Lots of Joe fans out there with disposable income at every toy show.

B,

The concept is making bootleg toys that are made in Chinatown, NYC. Kinda like the stuff made in Mexico, China and East Europe but he's made them art pieces. Really cool stuff. I'm addicted but the prices for a drop are way up there and apparently some of his drops have ended up being auction at Sotheby's but his recent ones are being sold through his site, shows or events like SDCC.
I've already made a custom black SalaryStak in Mego size.

That's cool. I seriously have never heard of this and now that you've explained it, I can dig.

So the "suck" is out of love and admiration for the cheap knockoff wonder, although they are being elevated here to "high art," which is fantastic! Very guerrilla.

You have to appreciate both the nostalgia love, and the really twisted sense of humour in his stuff. In many ways, it's kind of the flipside to the urban vinyl art toy movement (while at the same time embracing/sending up much of the conceits).

I just watched the whole video for the Suckadelic trading cards. Man, I am so totally jealous that they have their cards sealed in wax packs! Has anyone here actually picked up these cards? If so, are you a card collector or was it just a random thing because you're a fan of the toys?

With the exception of the Mego Museum cards (and all of the other many awesome cards made by the guys around here), most of the cards that I collect are from the 1960s - 1980s, but these Suckadelic cards are just so awesome that I would totally pick some up if they weren't so expensive.

shows how it produced old-school (check out the wax package printing!), and you see the Sucklord himself setting "chase" cards on fire, splattering them with paint and shooting them with a gun.

Apparently he's the Hunter S Thompson of nerd culture...

I have both the first and second series cards aquired from ebay. Both of my sets though are just the basics-- all cards and check list and for the second series I got the wrappers with it

I picked up the cards because it was a SUCK item I could actually afford and it is a great way to see many of the wonderful toys he has made. I am not really a big card collector, but in this case I made an exception

also on ebay and worth the 20$ (and signed, limited to 500) is a catalog sucklord made for the recent Boo-hooray exhibit. This prperback book is excellent and gives a lot of info as well as a ton of pictures for many of the pieces and things he has done.

My package just arrived from Suckadelic, and yes, they truly suck (bubble is taped on with scotch tape, but were worth the laughs as well. The writing on the file cards and packaging are really inspired. Also came with a bunch of stickers and cards. Not to mention a Microsexuals post-card. Funny stuff.

I just finished watching the first episode of Work of Art, and oh boy was it art school all over again for me. With all the pretentiousness and pettiness that always accompanies judged competition of this nature. Not to mention the added layer of edited manipulation of the television medium.

It's pretty obviously Sucklord is a ratings ringer (pun intended for those who saw the episode) brought in to challenge the art world he is both already opposed to and embraced by. Out of all of them, he's made his mark on the New York art scene (and around the country and abroad), gets gallery shows and already makes a living selling his art. He even got the cover of the Village Voice.

Even though the critics savage him, the studio mentor already admits to knowing The Sucklord and even having auctioned some of his art. The beating to his ego aside, Sucklord's exactly where he needs to be on this show and this exposure (albeit seemingly negative) can only make him more successful in the long run given that as with much the art world, it's as much about the cult of personality. As he says... he's a Villain and he Sucks. Pretty much consistently on message with his already existing marketing as CEO of Suckadelic Enterprises (as his subtitle says... contrasted with others who are "High School Art Teacher" or "Art Assistant")

The big question for me is, why isn't he suiting up in his Sucklord Gear? The teaser shows him getting more surly and confrontational in later episodes.

It's hard core art school flashback for sure. Art makes for an awkward fit in the reality competition genre, harder than food or fashion.

He choked on the challenge, though, I was surprised. Like he said, not enough sarcasm or message. Anyway, he'll make for some interesting viewing, and he'll just sell more toys.

He really did given what folks probably already know about his existing body of work. He seemed to have a way too precious view on the original (rather than transforming it), and it even lacked his usual self deprecating tone. He didn't even try to defend the merits of the original work as much as he should have by being so beholden to it. I'm surprised he didn't go the action figure/packaging route, although he might have been at a disadvantage knowing how time consuming making molds and casting are. Not having his usually stock pile of existing action figure body parts probably didn't help either.

Surprising that he didn't add his usual pimp or gangsta accessories to Gandalf. I'd guess it's also hard to create that sense of commodifying junk culture within the context of a non-commercial gallery. Much of his message and style has been all about the selling of remixed junk culture... which is much more obvious within a Soho gallery show that actually sells the work on display.

Cool. I haven't had a chance to catch Ep 3 yet. It will be interesting to see how the judges react to his signature style given how the judges brutalized the poor girl last week for trying to stick to her comfort zone.

It looks like what little we saw of his Carny rat toss last week was pretty mediocre as well within the context and theme, but he was spared a crit by being on the winning team. He does seem a bit limited by the format of these contests so far... A true suckled Carny show would be much more like his performance art at Sat a venue like SDCC where he lays down his wares on Chinese newspapers like an old lady hustling to selling vegetables on a street corner of a local Chinatown for example.

He has a very strong case for Mad Magazine style Parody and I think there is a certain degree of leeway that the gallery world of fine art has been given in terms of freedom of expression and political/social commentary.

Andy Warhol being the most high profile with his Superman, Soup Cans, Mickey Mouse etc.

But more contemporary guys like Ron English (who appeared in the latest episode) as well.

He's really lucky that he ruined that hippy chick's work of art and she went all zen about it. She didn't even rat him out at the crit. I'm sure if he had accidentally ruined the girl with the anxiety disorder's piece, we'd be watching an entirely different kind of episode.

Looks like the Pop art challenge was tailor made for him. Next week's challenge involving the kids looks like it has potential for hijinks.

So... how is this guy NOT getting taken down by Lucas arts and hasbro for trademark infringement?

I'm sure there is a degree of pure dumb luck on his part, but given the fact that the stormtrooper and crimson guard have been embraced by the gay community, you'd expect the backlash of stomping on the Sucklord would just be a bigger publicity coupe for him, and a negative one for Hasbro and Lucas.

Plus being part of the New York art scene probably does afford a great deal of support in the realm of freedom of expressions when your work is auctioned and sold in gallery settings by rich patrons.

I think he's solidly protected by parody laws.

Here is an NSFW outtake interview with him and his mom. Pretty insightful. LOL

More info on this weekend's show for those interested.

JB: That’s great. OK well DesignerCon is coming.

THE SUCKLORD: I have my own booth, and I’m going to be doing The Suckathon, which will be run like a late-night talkshow. I’m going to be set up with a desk, and I’ll hold force and opine about everything that I feel inclined to opine on. I’ll have guests sit down and talk with me about anything relevant and irrelevant.

JB: What will you be releasing?

THE SUCKLORD: The main exclusive is going to be the next piece in the Scrubs of the Universe line [Ed note: photo above by SpankyStokes is a teaser...]. And I’m going to have an exclusive Dumny and some one-offs of the Spacemen 4-packs. I’ll probably drop them at different times during the day, and see if I can get people who are stupid enough to keep coming back for these things.

The Gay Empire Pink Stormtrooper got a huge front page write up on Wired.com and was wholeheartedly embraced with positive feedback. This was several years ago so he certainly has made his grounds as a parody artist and yes, he's been embraced by the gay community, more so with his personal connections to it.
Ample enough time for these "parties" to raise their arms, or lawyers arms, to halt. Bottom line, it's art.

just read this interview. Again just shows you what they DON'T show you around the careful editing of the TV show. It appears that there was a performance art aspect of the carny piece that we didn't get to see.

Work of Art

JB: I'm going to give you a couple quotes. This one comes from guest judge Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn in the Huffington Post. She said that you "got the challenge intuitively" but she didn't like the "character you played." What do you think she meant by that?

THE SUCKLORD: [At the art opening] I was doing a little performance piece where I was acting like a sideshow huckster. The game is based off Shoot the Freak at Coney Island. You know the scams that go on at Coney Island? I was doing Sucklord huckster. She doesn’t like the character.

Pasadena Convention Center, 300 East Green Street, Pasadena CA 91101

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DKE Toys and Toy Break present the First Annual Suckathon starring the Super Sucklord. Can’t make it to Designer Con? Worried you may miss your favorite art star from some cable art reality show you may or may not have heard of? Tune in to

Toy Break (http://www.toybreak.com)

Toy Break (http://www.toybreak.com) this Saturday noon-5pm PST

Join the Sucklord at his first Suckathon interviewing celebrity art stars, super toy nerds, hot girls and random passers-by.

Watch him pimp his career and try to sell you a cheesy autographed headshot for $2 (resume included). Your amazingly cheap purchase enters you into a raffle for really cool stuff brought to you by the Sucklord himself (of course). You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll kiss two bucks goodbye.

Bad attitude, crass humor, costumes, helmets, toys and featuring booth babe, Gina Darling. Sit on the couch, be part of it. It’s gonna be huge. Well…it’s gonna be something.

Watch him hawk his wares and make a mockery of the toy scene and most likely himself. Suckadelic exclusives include:
Dcon 2011 Dumny
The new CHILDREN TOY straight from the Suckhole to you. 9 pc edition, only 6 available at Designer Con 2011

Anyone go to D-Con? Or watch the Suckathon?
He's really great and quite the natural and being a talkshow host.
REALLY wish I was there. That raffle grand prize was the bomb and loved how he ended up selling it and splitting the profits with the winner.
Hope he sells that Cooter Spaceman on his site. Totally rocks!
Gotta make the trek next year for sure.

Curious if anyone heard of the other cats bootlegging Sucklord like The Schmucklord and that guy selling the Suckpeg knockoffs.

looks like the final auction changed from 78 pieces to 39. so half the estimate doesn't seem too bad for half the original listing.

I don't know why anyone would do that all as one large collection like that in the first place, especially given the makeup of the rest of that sale.
