Okay -- I guess was dopey as a kid. I actually believed the ad that they would look like the picture. I bugged my mom until she sent my allowance off to get them. We got it all set up and a week later our maid poured them out and cleaned the fish bowl. I cried because I thought she murdered them. :smiley1:

Yeah, I had those as a kid, really disappointed of course b/c they didn't look that the ad. They still make these, y'know. I bought some for my class, I'll have to mix up a batch of brine shrimp for them!

I had these several times over, and very successfully. Like HardyGirl said, they have 'em now, they are called 'Triops eggs'....Had some for the longest time last summer. I'd put them on the deck in the morning and take them in at night.

Just a note......Even with proper feeding, (and THEN some..) what will eventually happen to the colony is that one guy (or girl) will CONSUME everyone else, leaving him/her self as the sole creature. Odd I know, but we have noticed this several times. The Triops look like tiny horseshoe crabs combined with centipedes. Never fails, every time the colony 'thins out' to two or four main 'bullies'...then only one remains. This last time we raised them, the remaining sucker got to be almost the size of a MARBLE! :smiley1: And talk about your sci-fi, look close at one of THESE monsters and be thankful they aren't the size of school busses. ;)

Oh yeah....about that famous ad...When I first glanced at it, I could have SWORN it said " A BOWELful of HAPPINESS" ...LOL..I was like YIKES!! I'll PASS!

I always wanted them but never got 'em until about 3 years ago. Huge let-down! Comic ads were so full of either imagination or BS but as a kid you always beleived in them. That is until you got the product. I wanted the submarine they advertised that 2 kids could ride in.

I've seen the Triops, Thundarr, but they do still make the REAL Sea Monkeys.

I never had any but my cousin did, he was sure they'd turn into something like the ad.

Anyone ever see the South Park when the gang sent away for them lol I just about died laughing.

The Sea Monkey packaging has gotten more creative than ever.

Click on any of the images at the bottom of this link for more info. There are currently 16 different Sea Monkey products including a watch, a pen, Space Shuttle set, Sea Monkeys on Mars, Executive Set (I wonder if George Bush has this one), and much more.

I begged and begged for Sea Monkeys as a kid -- but My mom always said no that they were not like the picture... Anyway that is why I picked the SeaMonkey Avatar.

Almost every time I read a comic as a kid, my desire to have these wonderful creatures as pets was intensified. I finally got some as an adult. Boy, those males can hold on tight to the females with their "antlers" when they are in the mood. I had several generations but one day I put a new toy in for them and the next day they were all black and dead. I was too heart broken to raise anymore...I am such a softy.

I remember reading somewhere (Dial "B" for Blog, maybe?) that legendary comic artist and editor Joe Orlando drew that initial Sea Monkey ad. Oh the shame.

I never had them as a kid, but I got a set for my wife when we were dating. Her nephew spilled them out and they all died just a few days after we set up their little tank.

Wasn't there a very short-lived live-action Sea Monkeys TV series?

That was one of the most deceiving ads from my childhood

Look at that disclaimer at the bottom. I never noticed it before:

"Caricatures shown not intended to depict Artemia salina". I'm guessing that's the scientific name for these creatures?

And what the heck is #2 "LIVING PLASMA"? "Sea-Monkeys, now with REAL BLOOD!!!"
