Any Deep Purple fans here?
I do reviews for magazines and web blogs. I like this one so much I figured I'd post it in here...
I got this for my birthday today. It is a double DVD set of new Deep Purple live footage at Montreux celebrating the night of the 40th Festival.
This is awesome! This is the reason why Ian Gillan is one of idols!
Steve Morse's guitar playing and Ian Paice's drums sound incredible. Roger Glover is still one the best bass players by far and you can't even tell Jon Lord is gone with Don Airey on keyboards. Deep Purple comes together hard in this double DVD set. I keep playing it over and over.
The second DVD is a bonus DVD of Deep Purple at the Hard Rock Cafe, up close and personal. It is pretty close let me tell you.
The bonus interviews are awesome also. They explain why Jon Lord exited the band. It was all on good terms.
Their new album, "Rapture of The Deep" is unbelievable. You can hear some live cuts on here. If you are Deep Purple fan, pick this up!!

I've only recently gotten into Deep Purple. Definitely like their sound, but I don't know much about the band and the only stuff I've heard is on the Greatest Hits CD I picked up a few weeks ago. I like all the tunes on that disc.
Cool review. Wouldn't mind checking that DVD set out.
(I've only recently discover how much I like Iron Maiden and Dio, as well. Don't know why I passed over bands like up 'til now because I've alway enjoyed heavy metal and hard rock.)

The only song I know is Smoke On The Water.
The first chords to the song are the ones that I think everyone learns how to play quickly when they first pick up a guitar. Great song and great group.

Of course. Live from the Playboy Mansion, Deep Purple! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=L58M88CweFg)
One of my favorite 70's bands, nothing pumps you up more for a night of hard partying than cranking up Deepest Purple.

Cool. I knew there was a reason I liked you!! Deep Purple rules!! Awesome music to crank up before going to do something that you need to be pumped up. I used to crank up Machine head before my band would play a big show at the Annex or the Barrymore Theatre.

Wow Demon and Hulk I've always felt the same about Purple. Here's another sleeper band that I also like to crank up for the pump from the same era Nugent's Dukes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HRpbvuU1D8&feature=related)
P.S. Paul, but the only think I like about rap is watching you dance around the pole at a stripclub

Wow...no Ritchie Blackmore (the man in Black) on Guitar? I think Deep Purple is one shade lighter without him.

Ian Gillan did some good stuff with Sabbath. I remember in H.S. Rocking out with smoke on the water, hush, and my womans from Tokyo.

The whole album and tour was kind of an accident he wound up in Black Sabbath. "Born Again" was a good album but Ian wasn't happy with any of the production or memorizing their lyrics. He left shortly after the tour and formed the Ian Gillan band, which years later thankfully Deep Purple reformed the Machinehead lineup to create the famous album, "Perfect Strangers" and the rest is history.
Here is Ian Gillan talking about some of embarrassing moments and the infamous Black Sabbath Stonehenge stage that was later used as a prop for comedy in the Spinal Tap movie because it was such a stupid idea.

PS. Sorry for the long wind. Ian Gillan is one of my idols. I worship him like some people in here worship original mego boxes. :)

I have a boot of Born Again before Geezer Butler ruined it with that awful mix job. It's not half bad. Perfect Strangers is one of my favorite songs; I was on cloud nine the first time I heard it. Ian amazes me with the range he still has.
And those Sabbath stories are hilarious.

Hey Bro, any chance of burning me a copy of that. I'd love to hear it.

My favorite DP album is "Perfect Strangers", I also enjoyed the "house of blue" light & "the battle rages on" . I like some on the stuff with Morse but not so much the last one they put out. It will never happen but i wouldnt mind one last farewell reunion cd with Blackmore & Lord back on board.

Richie Blackmore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritchie_Blackmore) is a paranoid, delusional butt wipe who literally lost his mind.
It was during the battle rages on tour in 95. He literally snapped when he realized that Deep Purple fans didn't come to see the almighty Richie Blackmore. They were there for the music!!!
So he walked off The Battle Rages On (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_Rages_On) tour with no warning or reason. The band almost crumbled if it wasn't for their friend Joe Satriani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Satriani) who jumped into the spot and took over the guitar so Deep Purple wouldn't have gotten sued by a ton of sponsors for cancelling shows.
Later on, Joe realized he bit off more then he could chew by taking on the guitar spot in Deep Purple and trying to keep up his solo career. He was nice about it and they worked in the great Steve Morse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Morse) into the band.
The album Purpendicular (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purpendicular)was born after that. Showing up how much more new music and guitar ideas were brought to the table with Morse on board.
He has added so much of dimension and widened the sound of Deep Purple.
Blackmore was a pompous, "all about me and nothing else" jerk and the members of Deep Purple wanted to kill him and when he exited it was probably the most healthiest thing for the band according to Ian Gillan.
Richie later went over the edge and put down his fender guitar and joined up with some Irish chick and he plays mandillion in a minstrel type : renaissance band. He looks and sounds silly to me. I am not into Lorena Mckennit type music. I think Richie Blackmore has a screw loose and he was poisoning Deep Purple's sound attitude for a long time. Given he was the original guitarist and creator but to me, Deep Purple didn't really start as a real band until Ian Gillan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Gillan) and Roger Glover came aboard on the great album, Deep Purple in Rock. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Purple_in_Rock) That was Deep Purple and a lot of music historians will agree.
Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to tell the story that people don't really know. Me being a Deep Purpleologist I happen to know some juicy information. :music-smiley-018:
If what I said isn't convincing. Go listen to the new album, "Rapture of the Deep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapture_of_the_Deep)." It is said to be the best selling Deep Purple album next to their reunion album 1984's Perfect Strangers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Strangers_%28album%29). According to Ian Gillan. Steve Morse has now officially played more shows then Richie Blackmore. The band Deep Purple has been going strong with Morse and they don't plan to stop.

I love Deep Purple, one of my top 10 favorite rock bands of all time.
I love pretty much every era of the band too. My personal favorite is probably the Mark III era with Coverdale and Hughes, but the Mark II Gillan/Glover era is magnificent as well. My favorite albums are "Burn" and "Fireball".
I think Steve Morse is a great addition to the band. Though I'm biased since I was a pretty big fan of his even before he joined DP. I love Blackmore's playing, he's a major influence on me, but I'm pretty convinced that in the last 15 years he's basically just lost his mind, lol. I'll say this though- Blackmore knew how to pick some amazing vocalists.....Gillan, Coverdale, Hughes, Dio, Bonnett, etc....
I have heard those early "Born Again" mixes, they're far better than the final product. But I still love the album even as it is. So many people seemed to think this was a terrible union but I think having Gillan's shriek mixed in with dark tunes like "Disturbing The Priest" is total genius. Matter of fact, I'm wearing a "Born Again" album cover t-shirt right now!
